We have pulled up the most recent website for VP Biden's Nomination Application. It appears that it is totally electronic, EXCEPT the part about where to send the letters of recommendation, which, it is stating to send directly to the SAs. We have been reading through old thread posts, searching websites, and still are confused. If miscellaneous letters of recommendation are flowing in to the various SAs themselves for the VP Nominations, how do they get put together with the electronic app at VP Biden's in DC? ANY INPUT ON HOW SHOULD ENVELOPE BE LABELLED? To whose attention, etc????

DS is trying to finish up an instruction packet for all those who have offered to write his nomination rec letters, but is hesitating on clear cut instructions for the VP.

Can someone please give some updated input on this?
Thanks in advance for the updated information.

Sometimes reading old threads can cause issues. The VP nom appointee is not like an MOC nom.

You submit and the SA determines. It is not done out of DC. There is no selection committee like an MOC. No slate of 10 where 1 can be charged.

I personally am a little confused regarding the question because at least for the AFA, no portal is open yet for applicants 2016, and won't be opened for at least 5 weeks. For the AFA you need to clear the PCQ. No ALO has to my knowledge a list from the AFA of 16 applicants.

Are you sure you that he file you are looking at is for 2016 and not 2015? Not trying to antagonize, just saying the SA's have yet to induct 15. May is way early for 16. No board for the SA's will meet until Oct.

I understand the excitement, but this is a marathon, not a sprint. High schools don't even have final grades yet.

Our ALO was very involved. don't submit with out them giving a once over. Again, VP is the rarest appointment, 1 in 1200+. Place it aside and work on getting teacher recs. Work on the CFA. Get medical records in order. Work on MOC noms. Use your energy wisely.

Most importantly don't spin your wheels until the SA says start spinning your wheels. You could be going insane for nothing if they don't say we want you to apply!

    Thanks, Pima. Advice well taken!

As far as the VP website... We just clicked on VP Biden Nominations link and pulled up a slew of info, including the electronic app, etc, which is when we became confused. DS will rest better with your input, and can get going on finishing his instruction packet for his MOC references before setting off to USAFA SS next week. (Truly excited!)

    Thanks again!

VP began accepting applications for Class of 2016 on 1 March. You are not too early.

One does not have to be an official candidate in order to complete the application. It is a simple fill-in-the-blank electronic form requiring minimal input. No reason not to get it out of the way.

Letters of Recommendation are not a requirement to complete the process with the VP. It is an Academy requirement depending on the Academy. USNA does not expect any at all and will treat them as a LOR at large. General guidelines is don't submit one unless it contains pertinent information from a close observer on significant traits not discussed elsewhere. Check with the ALO/MALO for other academies to see if they are expected/required.

    Hi Pima

I must say that, as a new member on this forum, I found it immensely useful. Thanks to all of you, old members, for being so involved in helping other. Following the guidelines on this forum, my DS has completed all the applications to the service academy and MoC, including the CFA and DoDMERB (Qualified). In fact he received a LOE from the West point last week. Very excited.

Now, he is turning his focus to VP nomination, have completed all the part of the application except not sure about the "Letter of Recommendation" requirement for the VP nomination.

We looked at the Service Academy forums and some old postings have suggested that VP nomination does not require a LOR at all, while others are suggesting to do so. On the other hand, Service Academies (for its admission application process though) suggests NOT to send any extra LOR other than requested from the suggested teachers and coaches.

    VP nomination website says:

PLEASE SEND ALL LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION DIRECTLY TO THE MILITARY ACADEMIES:

Therefore, can you please clarify following questions? (surely, you and others have been there and done it successfully):

    1. If my DS do need to send any LOR to USNA for the VP nomination?

    2. If yes, then can he ask same teachers to send the LOR? Basically it will the same duplicate effort (I personally don't think a good idea).

    3. He can certainly request new LOR from different teachers, coaches or community leaders where he volunteered.

    a. Who would you suggest will be the best person to request the LOR from?

    b. How many LOR are required for the VP nomination?

    Thanks for all your help.

    Cheers ...

no LOR's are sent as part of the VP Nomination. when they say send them to the SA, they mean only as part of your regular application to the SA. no additional LORs are sent as part of the VP nom.
