I was wondering, how do vice presidential nominees get selected?
All that is sent is personal information, an essay and some recommendations.. no academics, or resume sort of thing.
So what i should ask is the criteria for selecting individuals to get the nomination?
Do you have to have connections with the VP to get one?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hope this explains it. Click on the link for the entire process. Also, if you're interested in the other nominations, click on the link by my signature. It's the air force brochure, but its similar to the other academies. Around page 8-9 of the PDF, page 4 of the actual brochure, it talks about all the different nominations. Mike....

http://www.whitehouse.gov/assets/documents/2010_Academies_Application.pdf

"Due to a large volume of applicants (usually several thousand per academy), the Vice President has authorized the academies to evaluate all applications and rank them according to qualifications. In screening candidates, the academies evaluate an individual's high school or college academic record, results of the ACT and SAT tests, recommendations from individuals who are in a position to judge the applicant's character and academic potential, and physical and medical qualifications. In view of this screening by the academies, it is important that all correspondence subsequent to actual application (e.g., letters of recommendation, high school and college transcripts and ACT/SAT examination results) be forwarded directly to the academy when requested. Do not send this information directly to the Vice President."

Ususally (but not always), VP noms are used for well-qualified applicants who have issues beyond their control in obtaining a nom, such as candidates who reside overseas without a Congressional district of residence in the US. If there are not enough of these "special cases," then the SAs give them out based presumably on merit and the failure to obtain another nom.

I have a question for anyone who has completed and submitted their online VP nomination stuff already . . . My DS just completed all the areas of the form, cut and pasted his essay and loaded up the 5 .pdf recommendation letters. As soon as he clicked submit, poof, the form went blank. Does anyone know if you get an email confirmation that it was recieved? I think he was expecting something like a 'thank you for submitting screen'?

If the VP only has several slots to award nominations to nationwide is it advantageous to apply even?

Confirmation from VP

Yes, there should be a confirmation email from the VP.
