My DS lives in Virginia and only 1 nomination can be given out to each student. However, my DS applied to both USNA and USAFA. His number 1 choice is USNA, so he didn’t receive a nomination for USAFA. Should he give up on USAFA or is there a chance to receive the Vice Presidential Nomination? He already applied, but is unsure of how the process works because it is much different than the MOV and Senator nominations.

It seems the VP nomination is used by the SA admissions office on candidates they really want to attend their SA, but the candidate doesn't have another type of nomination. Has USAFA indicated that they have a special interest in your DS? If so, then there is real chance they may use the VP nomination to bring him in.

I thought most go nominations went to people not living in the United States

"The Vice President is the only authorized nominating authority who can nominate U.S. citizens without geographical restrictions. He may have a maximum number of five nominees in attendance at each authorized academy at any one time. Normally, he has one or two vacancies each year."

I don't think the VP nomination is the only source of a nomination for US citizens living overseas or in US territories. There is a process for achieving a nomination for those stationed/living overseas through the MOC for their Home of Record in the US, or in the case of military families, the Presidential nomination. For US territories, I believe the process is through the governor of the territory.

I can't speak to whether most VP noms go to those living overseas. From what I have read, there is not really a pattern other than it seems to be used by the SA admissions office when they don't have another nom available.

You've gone this far already, so don't give up. It is common for MOC's in competitive districts to limit candidates to one academy. The reality is that if you are down to only a possible VP nomination, the chances are slim.

The academy picks who gets the VP nominations and I assume, like other academies, they have a limited number of Superintendent's nominations. VP and Supe noms are like lottery tickets - you have to be really high on their list to get one.

Sounds like your DS received a nom to his #1. That's a great step in the right direction!

Funny thing how this whole process works mentally: DS has 3 Noms (at least 2 are principal) to #1 choice (USNA), as well as an offer of appointment. No Noms to USAFA, which he ranked as 2nd on his Nom applications. As he received his appointment offer this week, there is no need to apply for VP Nom, which was on his list of things to do.

The mental part? Not extinguishing all avenues available and closing the proverbial door on a USAFA Nom! Even though he is offered at his number one. It’s just weird and counterintuitive after all this effort and time to have that one little option still out there, and not go for it! It’s just not in his (our) make-up to not give everything his all, similar to every candidate.

So a real question here: anyone see any reason to still go for it, beyond the “its easy so just do it?” There doesn’t seem to be a reason that I can see. It seems greedy and boisterous to do do from our perspective. He IS interested in USAFA, he had to rank and did (looking back, he probably should have ranked differently with different Nom’s....but that’s water under the bridge at this point!!). He is also happy with his journey towards USNA. A perspective we do hold is that this has all been pointing to USNA, making a choice he would have to make (should he also have a USAFA offer) less difficult between the two academies.

I remember in April (April 7, I just checked the class of 2021 thread) there were about four members of this forum who received appointments to USAFA through their VP nom applications. At least one of them, I recall, was really surprised by it as they had no other nom and were looking forward to their plan B. Anything can happen. There are also some 50 Superintendent nominations, one of which could come your way in the spring. You just never know.

I read an April thread last year aboutcandidates with no nomination to the USAFA who had not received TWEs and thought they were still being considered. In reality though, no nomination means no appointment. For those of you with candidates who have appointments already, if it's their #1 choice, be happy and stop worrying. Your candidate made it! Now just enjoy senior year and the time you have left with them before they depart this summer!

A friend who graduated from USMA had a roommate who was there on the VP nom. Somebody usually gets one if there's a vacancy, so it could be you! I'm sure that cadet thought finishing his app and waiting was worth it!

The USNA website indicates you should "apply for all NOM's for which you are eligible" (or words close to that).

Apply for what he is eligible and let the SA's decide where to charge his NOM if they offer him an appointment.

Once you get the appointment (not just nomination) to #1 choice there is little reason to continue pursuing an appointment to other SA's, assuming that #1 is clearly and without doubt the first choice. But if there is even the slightest chance of a change in mind, it is best to keep all options alive.
