I am a United States + Canadian citizen, currently a junior in high school living in Toronto, Canada. I need to apply for the vice presidential nomination in a couple months, since I don't think I can apply for the congressional one. Does anyone know anything about how different the process is/if it's a lot harder to get in internationally? (This would all be for the USAFA)

Do you have a house or address in the US at all? I live in Japan but I still have a US address so I got my nom from there, so if you do have one you can apply for a nom from that state. If not, the VP nom is the only one you can apply for. In terms of if it's harder to get in as an overseas applicant, I would say it just requires a lot more communication and time management since you really need to make sure you turn in everything required, but outside of that I believe you would still compete against the same pool of candidates (assuming you can only apply for the VP nom), so I wouldn't say it's necessarily harder to get in (although I might be mistaken about that).

There are candidates every year who are U.S. citizens/dual citizens who apply to service academies from out of the country, including ones whose families no longer claim U.S. residence. If you browse/search the individual SA forums, you will find the threads.

There is no mad rush to apply for the VP nom, as it is managed by SA Admissions staff. I suspect there are Class of 2026 candidates who are finalizing that application now as the deadline looms. Very generally speaking, you have to get through the initial application process, be deemed an eligible candidate, to have the full application open up. The next cycle starts as the current one winds down.

You may be eligible to apply for nominations from other State/District elected officials, if your parent(s) had a U.S. residence at any point, even if they no longer own it or have no intention of returning. See link below, and browse the site for additional information. It’s about voting, but that means you could potentially apply for a nom from the Representative from the District where your family resided, if they did.

And, I hope you are planning to apply to USAFA’s summer program. Oops - deadline may have passed. Here is the link:

Best advice overall:
- Read every page, link and menu item on USAFA.edu
- If you are eligible to apply for noms from Senators or Representatives, go to their websites to research their service academy nomination pages. There may be virtual information sessions. Deadlines can be as early as early fall.

Does the VP slate work like the MOC slates? Meaning, are 10 people submitted for each SA, one person is charged to the VP for each SA, then the other 9 people for each SA are eligible for appointments and may be charged to other sources?
