I am a United States + Canadian citizen, currently a junior in high school living in Toronto, Canada. I need to apply for the vice presidential nomination in a couple months, since I don't think I can apply for the congressional one. Does anyone know anything about how different the process is/if it's a lot harder to get in internationally? (This would all be for the USAFA)
There are candidates every year who are U.S. citizens/dual citizens who apply to service academies from out of the country, including ones whose families no longer claim U.S. residence. If you browse/search the individual SA forums, you will find the threads.
There is no mad rush to apply for the VP nom, as it is managed by SA Admissions staff. I suspect there are Class of 2026 candidates who are finalizing that application now as the deadline looms. Very generally speaking, you have to get through the initial application process, be deemed an eligible candidate, to have the full application open up. The next cycle starts as the current one winds down.
You may be eligible to apply for nominations from other State/District elected officials, if your parent(s) had a U.S. residence at any point, even if they no longer own it or have no intention of returning. See link below, and browse the site for additional information. It’s about voting, but that means you could potentially apply for a nom from the Representative from the District where your family resided, if they did.
Ensuring Service members, their eligible family members and overseas citizens can vote -- from anywhere in the world.

And, I hope you are planning to apply to USAFA’s summer program. Oops - deadline may have passed. Here is the link:
For high school juniors heading into their senior year, the Air Force Academy Summer Seminar program allows participants to live like a cadet.

Best advice overall:
- Read every page, link and menu item on USAFA.edu
- If you are eligible to apply for noms from Senators or Representatives, go to their websites to research their service academy nomination pages. There may be virtual information sessions. Deadlines can be as early as early fall.
