OP - my DD is a youngster now but during her plebe year - she did 3 separate 1 second per day videos. A first semester, a second semester & a summer. She downloaded an app for 1 second a day and then used her own cell phone to record the videos. She usually uploaded the videos on you tube about a week after the end of the semester. I had hoped she would continue the videos into this year, but no luck - too busy 
As far as phone calls after plebe summer, it's really up to the individual mid. Some weeks I talk to my DD 5 times - other weeks I won't get a call at all. What I have learned over the last 20 months is to let her place the "how is everything going" phone calls based on her schedule. If I call her, she assumes something big is happening!
