Good morning, afternoon, or evening,

I am an out-of-state Florida early decision applicant for the upcoming class.
This post is primarily to query this community about my chances at admission to VMI and to ask a few questions. For the past year or so I've read nearly every VMI post on this website, so thought I'd finally make one of these admissions posts for both myself and anyone who's like me in the future with similar stats, wondering if they can make it in.

I have recently visited the school and interviewed with an admissions counselor, and will be attending the November open house.

Stats:
GPA: 3.189 Unweighted, 3.622 Weighted
SAT: 1210 Composite, 1240 Superscore (Will be taking another in December hoping for a better score)
In School Activities: NJROTC Officer for three years, Wrestling for one year
Out of School Activities: Boxing for one Year, Jiu-jitsu for one year
Recommendations: one from my NJROTC instructor, a Master Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps, one from a teacher, and one from my guidance councilor (required)

Concerns:
1. My primary concern with my application has to do with my Junior year grades. Unfortunately last year, entirely through my own fault, I had let my grades slip, which while not completely destroying my GPA, shows a negative progression. Fortunately however, I have since corrected in my senior year, albeit potentially too late to matter.

2. Looking at the profiles of classes, my stats seem dangerously average from my point of view, but I'd like to get other's perspectives as I'm my own toughest critic and likely would feel this way with any stats.

Questions:
1. On the application under activities which list things such as clubs and sports, I put down 3 years under the Officer Club/Activity category thinking this was a general thing, so I listed it considering my position as an officer in NJROTC. However, JROTC itself is also listed as an activity, so I'm wondering if I should change the application to not list any years under Officer Club/Activity or keep it as is.

2. I'm currently writing my personal statement, and was wondering if anyone had any general tips on topics to touch on? Looking for tips general enough to make sure I'm headed in the right direction, and not specific enough as to sway my writing towards a specific topic or idea.

3. During the open house, would it be possible to speak with admissions again to go over my application? During the interview most of my paperwork was not yet submitted, and it will be by the open house date. I'm not specifically looking to interview again, as it would be likely a waste of time on their part, but could I speak with someone in person just to go over the application and clarify anything which would potentially need to be cleared up such as the first question?

4. Do you have any other advice for me to strengthen my application?

5. From your perspectives, how likely am I to be accepted?

Conclusion:
If anyone has any advice, or any questions to ask me, I'll be monitoring this post and will gladly answer any follow-up questions and engage in discussion.
Thank you all for your time.

I would maybe discuss your junior year grade decline, what happened, how you are overcoming that obstacle. Show responsibility by acknowledging your fault in what happened and maturity by taking ownership of those grades and how you plan to turn that around. I would also talk about anything that may make you unique / stand out from other applicants. Out of State is harder to get in than in state just due to the % they are required to admit from in state. My son was an out of state applicant accepted to rat mass 2015+3 ( he graduated in May). He had 28 ACT, not sure of his SAT- sorry. His unweighted GPA was a 3.8 and his weighted was a 4.02. His main extra curricular was JROTC - leadership within that as well as drill team. He also started a political science club.

It is really hard for anyone here to project if you will get accepted or not because the numbers change each year. Looking at the most recent stats. I found average SAT of 1190 and average GPA of 3.63. The site I was on said if your GPA is at or below 3.63 you would need a higher SAT to compensate. Another site listed the average GPA as 3.71 and SAT 1205 (combined reading and math) and ACT of 27. So your SAT seems ok - GPA could be an issue - but again - discuss this in you essay.

I would recommend speaking with admissions again at the overnight - it certainly cannot hurt.

Thank you for the advice! Right now, I'm just trying to demonstrate as much dedication to self-improvement as possible, as well as to the admissions process. I'll certainly be speaking with admissions again at the overnight, hopefully I'll be able to clear up any misunderstandings.

Agree with Turtlerunner above and I’d repeat the part about speaking with admissions again. The more you separate yourself from the pack and highlight your desire to attend VMI, the better your chances for admission.

My grades were slightly lower and I'm a rat right now. Separate yourself from others with extracurriculars. Nothing is guaranteed, but I wouldn't sweat it too much.
