So I'm a rising sophomore in the VTCC. Iv'e been getting a lot of questions about new cadet week and life in the VTCC as a freshmen. I figure that it would be easier for me to just start a new thread where I can hopefully answer some questions. Feel free to ask me anything!

How often do you get your hair cut? Where do you go and how much does it cost?

Also, do you know of any geneeral engineering cadets that participate in the CEED mentoring program?

During red phase (first 6 weeks) you have to get your hair cut every week. I go to hokie cuts which is in downtown Blacksburg. It's about ten bucks not including a tip. Funny you mention CEED. I actually do know a cadet in my year who is doing that this summer. Apparently he's really enjoying it.

My son signed up for the CEED mentoring program this fall but were given the impression that it might interfere with Corps activities.

What is the toughest aspect of red phase? Is there a big difference between red and white phases?

Personally, I think that red phase is the hardest part of the year. Yes that includes new cadet week as well. Its the combination of having zero freedoms and having to balance academics that makes it so hard. There is a huge difference between red and white phase with regards to the privileges that you get.

I have a question about the enforced evening study time during the week. Are there rules about ear buds/music, cellphones, texting, surfing the internet, social media use, etc. when the freshmen are supposed to be studying, and if so, how is this monitored and enforced?

Billberna, media/music is prohibited during ECQ unless it is for academic purposes. Freshmen must keep their doors open

VTCC parent here - totally agree with tibreaker but just one clarification - some cadets use ear buds to block out noise but they are not connected to their phone. Obviously, you could use earplugs but I think they are just handy.
