Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Class 2021

Thanks for the heads up...I will advise my guy to check.

Be prepared, VA Tech Application Status website keeps crashing.

Yes, #3 couldn't get through and then he said, "I really don't care. I am going to VMI or a service academy." So...there you have it. I was like, 'Aren't you a little curious?' and he was like, "No." so now we wait....but really, this kid wants a service academy but is so delighted with VMI that if nothing else comes his way he can press ahead with a clear and happy heart. It is the same, when we visited VA Tech and he did the overnight (I wanted him to have options--you know, things that were not so stringent--he could be a cadet and still sit in class next to girls in miniskirts...that sort of thing) and we were driving away and I was like, 'Oh that was really nice." and was like "VMI is better." So, there you go.

DS had the same opinion of VT 3 years ago. He liked that VMI and the academies are all in. Everyone is doing the Cadet activities, not just those on scholarship/commissioning path.

VT has a wide variety of scholarship options and the alumni bonds are very tight. The corps of cadets within a large student body provides opportunities not available at other SMCs...
Another point for scholarships is that VT has "regional" scholarships in and out of state which benefit potential students from certain geographic areas. Prospective students who are interested should check with the folks at the Holtzman Center sooner than later!

Just got back from orientation last night. Had a great time but man that was a lot of walking. Got over 10,000 steps in both days. Got fitted for his uniforms but had to go back and get his feet rechecked. They gave him size 8 low quarters and boots. He tried to tell them his toes were touching the front of the shoe but the cadet originally helping him wouldn't listen. They eventually swapped them for size 9.

Freshmen year your social life will pretty much suck. The only friends you'll really have will be in the corp. In my opinion, red phase is the hardest part of the year. That being said, you'll probably make friendships that will remain for the rest of your life.

Mine was the same all in for VMI. He will be a 2nd this year and loves. I really can't say enough good things about the place. Except the food

We just came back from orientation and the best part was the VTCC and NROTC sessions. As a new VTCC parent, most of the other orientation sessions for parents did not apply to us and the information is on the websites. It seems they want to just keep the parents busy while the students break out into their sessions. We were very impressed by the new dorms and they were very thorough on what to expect. I do think that orientation should be changed for VTCC vs. regular students because there was a lot of wasted time because the experience for VTCC is completely different. We got a lot of great advice from the cadets but we would have liked to have spent more time with them. Bottom line, as a parent, don't knock yourself out attending the general sessions except for the "Money Matters" and the "Mandatory College Session" for their major. Obviously, you need to attend the "Mandatory Corp of Cadets" session and the ROTC session that applies to you. However, some of the most valuable information was obtained waiting for your student to get fitted for their uniforms. Cadets are available to answer your questions so come prepared. They were great!
