Virginia Tech ROTC Class of 2015

Back on topic...cadets at VT must do push ups for every touch down with a cheerleader on their back...so make sure you are physically prepared. I believe they rotate each branch, and of course the cadets too.

Ha! I wish.

DS is currently finishing up his first year in the corps on a NROTC scholarship. He's also in the engineering school. He's had a great year, really likes both Tech & the corps, and has made a lot of friends. He's headed to USNA in the fall (second year applicant), but making the decision to leave was really tough.

If you haven't found them yet, there are two "Parents of VTCC Class of 2015" groups on facebook. The "Parents of VTCC Class of 2014" was really helpful last year. DS and I would be happy to answer any questions.

VA Tech is currently winning me over quite rapidly right now. Still waiting on the NROTC scholarship, but whether or not I receive it will little affect my decision to attend Virginia Tech right now.

Ut Prosim.

Edit: I'll be hailing from all the way out here in Hawaii, so the scholarship does carry some weight. Hooray for out-of-state costs!

Hi Brass! Yes, I found the closed group on FB. Thank you! Glad to hear that your DS enjoyed the Corp and ROTC. Our DS is in same situtation....got the QNV letter last week from AFA and plans to reapply after freshman year. That is, unless he drinks enough of the Hokie koolaid! CONGRATS on the USNA acceptance! I sure do love Annapolis! :) If you don't mind me asking, was his first year really tough in ENG? I know that the first year they all take the same classes so prepare me for what's to come "gradewise". DS is an oustanding student BUT one who has never had to crack a book. I'm assuming that will change this Fall????

Aloha! I hope your scholarship comes through and that we will see you in the Hokie Nation! Keep us posted!

The plot thickens!!!

Hi WardNC....yes, out of state H$$$urts, I know! I wanted to answer your question...our son did receive one of the ELS's. That was nice! Can you say "laptop"? And I just figured taht you are from NC! :) Neighbors. We go to the OBX whenever we can get there. Going in two weeks for spring break, as a matter of fact! :)

I hope your son gets to attend VT if that is what he wants. Our poor Class of 2015 kids are hitting college at a bad economic time.:frown:

Thanks for the information! OBX is awesome!! I love going there and just getting away. We have vacationed there and my favorite was Avon...very quiet. I enjoy watching the sunrise then crossing the street and to watch it set over the sound. Have a safe trip!

DS has VT #1 and NC State #2...he just received the NROTC Scholarhips for NC State. DS has a big decision to make!

He was already leaning hard toward State because of cost and this just may have pushed him over the edge.

Good luck to everyone! Students and parents!
WardNC:biggrin:

I love Annapolis too! Tech is beautiful, but I won't be missing the drive (we're in Norfolk, so 5+ hrs. I'm already planning the Annapolis trips:smile:)

As far as the grades, I thought the school did a great job at orientation getting the kids to understand that college=work, even if high school didn't. The corps has mandatory study hours from 6-11, so that really helped. Not much else to do but homework! That being said, the kids are busy. It seemed like DS always had some project for either the corps or NROTC that he had to work on.

question

Today I learned that I did not receive the NROTC scholarship, but I made the online matriculation fee to VA Tech and printed off the instructions for the College Program application.

How competitive is it to get into the College Program? From the people I've talked to; it's not that difficult. The struggles just come after you're in. Is this true?

I'm sorry about the scholarship! I'm assuming you've applied to & been accepted to the Corps as well as VT? As long as you're in the corps, getting into the NROTC college program doesn't look like it will be an issue. Go to question #7 on this page:

http://www.usnavy.vt.edu/about/faq.htm#7

From what DS has said, whether you're on scholarship or college program doesn't make any difference in what you do.

Brilliant. Thank you; that's a weight off my shoulders. Yes, I'm in Tech and the Corps; sent in my "yes" today.

Congrats, to The Animal! We are heading to VT today to drop off DS for the Stay the Night / Cadet program. Tomorrow will watch drills and have lunch w/ Nick, a poster on this site who is in the Corp. Will report back any info that may be of interest when we return!

Thanks! I think I suffer from the one downside to living in Hawaii: airfare. I would've loved to spend the night.

My son just received notification that his transfer to Virginia Tech has been approved. he has a 4 year NROTC marine option scholarship and will studying history (he thinks). We are beyond excited!

Hello all. I will be attending VT CoC in the summer under NROTC. I'm hoping to select SEALS after grad. Anyone else looking to do the same? I'm looking for someone to train with.

We've had three guys get selected for SEALs just in the three years I've been here (which is ALOT). There are a few more who're competing for it in the future, and they would be great resources for you once you get here. Good luck!

Nick4060:
Are they upperclassmen now?

Yes. One of those who was selected will be commissioning in May. And there are a couple current juniors who're in the selection process right now. When you arrive and get settled in the NROTC unit, just ask around. Let them know youre interested in that field and they'll point you in the right directions. Finding people to work out/train with here is not difficult. We have a few Corps organizations devoted soley to that kind of PT.

Thanks a lot man you were a huge help. Did you sat you're a cadet now?

Penn State vs. Va Tech

My DS is facing a dilemma in choosing schools. He rec'd a NROTC scholarship to Penn State in Jan. It was his second choice behind Va. Tech. Plan A had been to attend the USNA, but rec'd TWE April 1st. He put his name on the wait list for VT Today he got an e-mail saying a spot has opened up at tech. He is in a quandry since he has spent the last month getting adapted to the idea to going to PSU. Now he is not sure what he wants to do. We visited both campuses, but didn't visit the units since he was touring with his triplet siblings and he was so sold on going to the NA. He is admitted to the engineering program at both schools. He plans to study aerospace engineering and apply again to the academy next year. He wants to be a naval pilot.
Any insights on comparing the two schools?
