Virginia Tech ROTC Questions

...

You are now listed as a Citizen Leader Track (non-ROTC) Cadet applicant.

Please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions or concerns about your file.

looks like they are reviewing my application again...... jeezzzz

They still have you listed as interested in participating in the Corps of Cadets. Might want to call them back, as this is the part you didn't want to deal with in the first place -- the time commitment of being in the Corps. (Unless I misunderstood.)

Well here's the update.... and Im not feeling good about this........

Dear _____

We have processed your request to change your student status on your application. We have removed your interest in Army (ROTC).

You are now listed as a Citizen Leader Track (non-ROTC) Cadet applicant.

Please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions or concerns about your file.

So it looks like they still expect you're joining the Corps of Cadets. I don't know if that's what you intended, but if not, then it's time to contact them again.

Great minds... (except I'm confident when I say kinnem has a greater mind, and a greater avatar)

Sorry for the confusion.
I don't mind being in the Corps of Cadet and do all that PT and classes, but I just do not want to get involved in the military what so ever. The guidance counselor told me that the Citizen Leader Track is different than the ROTC track because ROTC is for people that wanted to take military classes and join the military. Citizen Leader Track means that you still do the Cadet workouts (3 PT a week, 1 leadership lab, 1 leadership class) but with no military involvement. They both have similar schedule, and they both automatically get ELS scholarship.

My previous acceptance (Army ROTC track) still stands (according to the guidance counselor that told me, hope she is not lying), but now they are reviewing me as a normal Cadet which involves no ROTC. The lady did told me that there's a chance I won't get accepted, which it scared the crap outta me. ..

My DD attended undergrad at VT (non CoC/ROTC) and is now on fellowship there for her Masters. She was very close to some cadets, and because of study hours in the cadet dorms she was there constantly studying with an AROTC cadet. Plus, she was in a sorority with ROTC cadets., and as a military brat she was able to speak their lingo. I remember her saying one time that if a CoC freshmen dropped out before 6-8 weeks in (@ midterms) VT had the right to say goodbye to them as a student too. Don't know if they did or didn't, but that is probably why she is being cagey regarding admissions.

I am not trying to scare you, but VT is an SMC and they want to make sure that those that checked the CoC box are doing so with pure intentions and not to get an admissions edge.

On the ELS letter it states that every cadet this year was awarded the scholarship. I'm guessing that means there was less than 200 prospective cadets?
Sorry for the delayed response: No, the last class of incoming cadets was fortunate to benefit from the generosity of VTCC alums. Every cadet received an ELS.

I'm hoping someone can give us some advice . . . DS was awarded a 4 year/Type 7 Technical AFROTC Scholarship that he's hoping to use at Virginia Tech. This afternoon he was accepted into VT however, not into the School of Engineering. Instead, he was accepted into the Interdisciplinary College with a non-technical major of University Studies which is what VT recommended for people who may not be accepted to engineering. Question is this . . . DS still wants to activate the scholarship and pursue a technical degree. Is there any way to make this happen? Thanks for the guidance.

One more thing. . . nowhere on DS's Virginia Tech Offer of Admission does it mention whether or not he's into the Corps of Cadets. He checked the box on his application and we've received correspondence from the Corps in the past (re: "Spend the Night" program, Emerging Leader Scholarships, etc.). Will acceptance to the VTCC come separately or are we to assume that because he's accepted to VT that he's also accepted to the Corps?
Apologies for all the questions but the help is much appreciated! :D

onesooz -- I don't know if this helps or not, but my DS's Virginia Tech Offer of Admission states in the very first sentence, "Congratulations on your admission to Virginia Tech and the Corps of Cadets!" Included with the offer was a certificate for the Emerging Leader Scholarship. The envelope came from the Office of Admissions, however all of the correspondence letterhead was from the Corps of Cadets.

I will leave it to vamom, but the way your post reads is he is accepted as a nontech major at VT, but AFROTC scholarship states he has to go tech IOWS, without approval from HQ AFROTC he will not be able to activate the scholarship since VT says his major is non tech!

Contact the det. to see if they can help your child to change the major.
~ When I say contact the unit, I mean him, not you.
~~ I can tell you as a VT parent that they will not talk to you next year unless your child creates a password for you...especially the bursar

Hmmmm... That's interesting. I assume your DS accepted via the online acceptance and then received the envelope at a later date!? Do you happen to recall the timeframe between accepting and the BFE arriving in the mail? DS was just notified of his acceptance at 5pm today via his online account so we've seen nothing yet via snail mail. Thanks so much for the reply/help!!!

Thank you Pima! DS will do just that. It's a disappointment that this all transpired after 5pm today and he won't be able to call until Monday :(.
I appreciate your guidance!!!

No, he hadn't looked online -- this envelope was the first we heard of his admission from VT....coincidently it came in the mail the day we returned from spending the weekend with the Corps of Cadets at TAMU (where he was also accepted). Both schools are extremely attractive to my DS, although he is set on becoming an Aggie. We are keeping both options open for now as he anxiously awaits to hear from the 3rd AROTC Board. Good luck with your DS....I hope things work out in his favor.

Hmmm, my ds had a little bit different letter from VT admissions. His congratulated him on being admitted into the engineering department "as a freshman cadet", but didn't say anything else about the Corps. Then later he got a letter from the Commandant.

I'm not sure how it works with 4 year scholarships, but I do know it is pretty common for engineering students to only be admitted to university studies for the first year. I hope the detachment can shed light on what to do!

My status is changed from ROTC to non ROTC cadet now with my major. I am so happy ^_^
onesooz- On your DS admission's page, it doesn't state whether or not she got into CoC. You have to wait until 2 weeks( i think) to get your actual mail letter. The letter will state whether or not she is accepted as a Freshman Cadet or Civilian. On my letter, it said I was accepted as a Cadet, and I received an email and an invitation to the VTCC 2019 facebook group. hope that helps

Since it was part of the discussion, for the record there are 348 incoming freshman (however I know of at least 1 that dropped this week) which brings the VTCC total to approx 1090 this year.

Curiosity, what is the number for ROTC? I know that you can be in the Corps without being in ROTC, but can't be in ROTC without being in the Corps. I am guessing it is probably ROTC.

I should let gurban answer but I believe it's the size of the Corps. I remember when DS went for a visit they were talking about getting the Corps back to 1000, which leads me to believe those are numbers for the Corps.
