Virtual Candidate Visits

I was just invited to a 2-day candidate visit, which is supposed to approximate an overnight visit. Did anyone else get this invitation? In the past, did the invitation to an overnight visit signify that a candidate is being looked at very seriously? If I accepted the invitation, I would have to miss 2 days of school. If I decline the invitation, do you think that could be held against me for admissions purposes?

The virtual version is offered for the same reasons the f2f one is. It’s a positive thing but makes no promises. It is in no way a guarantee.

Would you have leaped at the chance to attend this if it was f2f and cheerfully missed school? If yes, then leap at this and cheerfully miss school, because that is what is on offer this year. It will cost you nothing, as compared to a f2f visit with associated travel costs and more actual time away from home.

I sure USNA will send other VCVW invitations out. It seems to me I saw a recent thread mentioning a virtual visit, but I can’t recall which SA. You may want to search recent threads to see what others have reported.

While it’s a rough go that the virtual aspect precludes that up-close observation and interacting with mids where they live, it does even the playing field for those who would have had to decline due to lack of funds.

If you are serious about USNA, then you take every opportunity to learn more about it and see if that path to a commission is right for you. A good two-way fit is the foundation block for success at USNA.

Declining should not impact your application in any way.

If you cannot go, it will NOT be held against you and will NOT impact your application negatively.

My DS was in the same boat. He was the Captain of the XC team and had to miss a meet to go on a Candidate Visit Weekend (CVW). He chose to go, and it solidified his resolve to go to USNA.

Everyone who was ever a candidate has attached some importance to getting invited to a CVW, because everyone is looking for some indication that their chances at getting an offer of appointment are improving. It comes up a lot on the forum, and people more experienced than I have assured me that getting a CVW invite is no such indication.

If you have the means to go, I think you would enjoy it. If you don't, then certainly don't worry about it.

I also received the same invite. However, I went to a CVW in person back in January, so I politely declined because of school and sports. We are fortunate in my area at this time to have those things going on.

I think that I may have misunderstood. I know absolutely nothing of these "Virtual" visits. When the OP said they didn't want to miss 2 days of school, I assumed it was the "show up on The Yard on Thursday and leave Saturday morning" visit.

The hours of the virtual CVW visit coincide with school days, like 9am-5pm.

My DS also went to CVW In January. He turned down a virtual CVW in August for the same reasons as Drenns3. He just got another email inviting him to go to a VCVW later this month.

It feels that this year has thrown some of the conventional wisdom for a loop. e.g. If one is invited to CVW then they will not be invited to NASS. Add in a new IT system, and it seems likely that there will be duplicated actions

I’m curious how a vcvw (boy, hope this doesn’t end up needing to be added to the acronym list 😳) will work...watching Mids on virtual classes, virtually? Im sure they will get other stuff in, too. But yikes...Mid life isn’t exactly exciting ATM. Especially plebes, who usually have the candidates.

On the flip side, maybe in this virtual environment, a candidate could do both a vcvw AND their home classes, virtually 🤷‍♀️?

Maybe some candidates but I am brick and mortar and football practice right after school......it’s all good. I did one in person in January. Maybe Admissions can send my spot to someone else.

Well .... If I were you, I would drop everything else I was doing and join the Virtual event, whenever that is.

Does the Naval Academy and service afterwards appeal to you? If it does, then push the accept button. Who cares whether it counts in the selection process or not. Be glad that you did it.

Now I am wondering whether I should start the day by trimming the never ending fence line, or cleaning gutters, or both ... or even better, getting 10 lb or so of back ribs and throwing them on the grill .... My wife has God covered this morning. She’s the Church pianist, and she does that Virtually right now.

I had a thread about this earlier. My DD attended CVW in January and was invited to the August virtual one as well. She accepted because of course if they invite you You attend. Her first day she asked them about the event and they told her if she had already attended then she didn’t need to continue with the virtual. They said she was probably sent another invite by error and that she should only attend one.

At USNA this past year when online classes were going on, MIDN were expected to show up on camera clean-shaven and in appropriate attire (not in uniform). I would think "appropriate" would be "business casual", based on what I saw my DS wear when he was home. I'm thinking a shirt with a collar and nothing in the background that would be deemed "not-professional" or "controversial" in any way.

An AC/DC tour t-shirt is not "business casual", for instance. You should wait to pull that one out of the closet for I-Day.
Additionally, if you want to leave the My Little Pony poster up on the wall behind you, that's your choice, but it may seem unprofessional to some. ;)
