got 3yr scholarship. Medical/vision completed in May2017. Then Nov 2017 needed re test. Completed vision 20/20 and 20/40 with correction and diagnosed with lazy eye since birth.
Now they are are saying I’m disqualified. Will a waiver be automatically reviewed?
How do I find out current status if final disqualified or being reviewed for waiver?
Thank you

Why did they disqualify you for vision? If there were any vision issues, you should never even have made it to the physical portion of the DODMERB...

That’s what I don’t understand and it took so long. There’s no explanation of why I was disqualified. Would you know where I can get info for reason?

Sadly, no I don't know. Best bet is contact your DODMERB liaison

I'm not a doctor, but let me take a stab at this. You say your corrected vision is 20/20 and 20/40? vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes is a requirement, so that is likely one DQ. You also note that you have a lazy eye, which I presume is the same eye that is only correctable to 20/40? This is probably diagnosed as Amblyopia, caused by your Strabismus, both of which are disqualifiers.

Thank you. My eye doctor said they could issue correction that will make the vision 20/20 both eyes. Could I get a waiver then? Or lazy eye is automatically dq

A DQ isnt the end of the road. It will be up to whichever service offered you a scholarship as to whether you will be granted a waiver or not.

it was army scholarship

Look at this DoDMERB waiver flow chart:
https://dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil/Content/MedicalWaiverConsideration.pdf

Army ROTC will automatically take a DQ and submit it for waiver consideration. Once you see the DQ code, gather information that can argue that you are qualified from your own eye doctor and submit it to DoDMERB. They will then forward the additional medical information to the waiver authority at Army ROTC Cadet Command.

It may be a good idea to consult with an opthalmologist who has a military/DoDMERB background to obtain a second opinion and who can frame a statement in DoDMERB friendly medical language.

P.S.
If your waiver is denied, it is possible to appeal the decision if you have compelling additional information.

@Island girl. I'll take a stab at this.

I don't think you're DQ based on your visual acuity.

The regs state , "...for entrance into USMA or ROTC, distant visual acuity that does not correct to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other does not meet the standard." You say you are corrected to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, so you're good.

You also say you have lazy eye. The correct medical term for lazy eye is amblyopia which is basically the eye not having a visual acuity of 20/20. Some people use the term lazy eye for a condition called strabismus which is technically incorrect.

The key is what's causing the amblyopia? The most common cause of amblyopia is strabismus which is basically your eyes aren't looking in exactly the same direction when you're looking at an object.

One (or maybe both) of your eyes probably deviates and therefore misaligned. There are standards for how much the eye can deviate. An exotropia is one where one or both eyes deviate outward. Esotropia is inward and hypertropia is one where one eye is higher than the other.

The reg also states, " For entrance into the USMA or ROTC programs, the following conditions are also disqualifying: esotropia of over 15 prism diopters; exotropia of over 10 prism diopters; hypertropia of over 5 prism diopters."

As a side note, the DoDI that DODMERB uses says esotropia, exotropia, and hypertropia are DQ. However, there is an additional sentence..." For entrance into Service academies and officer programs, the individual Military Services may set additional requirements."

So your DQ may actually be some type of tropia and the deviation of one (or both) of your eye(s) is beyond the standards for the Army.

I think the detail in GoCubbies reply is the most specific I have ever seen on these forums. I hope s/he is a eye doc!

My DS had DoDMERB eye exam today. Had difficulty with 3D and has a lazy eye. Vision has always been 20/40. Wants Army ROTC? Do you know if this can be an automatic DQ?

Depends on how well he does with depth perception testing.

What caused to lazy eye in your DS? Are his eyes misaligned? If so, then it depends on how misaligned his eyes are.
