Vision on IDay

On another site, someone made note that there were a good many candidates sent home on IDay because their vision, when tested on IDay did not meet DoDMERB standards. I was just wondering about this. What are DoDMERB's standards? I do not understand how they could pass the DoDMERB exam and then be sent home on IDay because of their vision. My vision is not bad (20/20 or 20/30 in the left and 20/80 in the right). However, I my right eye has been getting worse and worse each year and am concerned that on IDay my vision will be worse than the initial DoDMERB exam and I will be sent home.

P.S. I know that I post a lot about a lot of things that may be silly or what not. However, I have worked so hard for to fulfill my dream of attending the Naval Academy and I do not want to get to IDay and have everything that I've worked for be taken away. Anyways, thanks in advance for your reply(s).

I don't know where you heard that from, but I wasn't even tested on I-Day for vision. That came in week 4 or 5 of plebe summer. They only tested color vision on I-Day, and passed out BCGs to those who needed them.

Oh yeah, don't celebrate too hard the night before either...they do a breathalyzer test as well.

Most of I-Day is getting shots you need, and initial uniform issue (the first of about 20) followed by organizing your room.

I, like yourself, tended to kinda worry too much about I-Day. I guess the stories of people getting sent home within the first few hours shocked me a little. Don't worry. Most of those are voluntary DORs by people who "didn't know it was a military school"...mostly athletes who were duped into believing they would ONLY be playing basketball or football.

Thanks for the reply. What are BCG's... Battle Combat Goggles (the "stylish" military glasses? Don't worry, I, unlike some of those voluntary dropouts you mentioned, want to be there and want to go to the military.

marine, I think what you might have heard is what DMeix is refering to, the color blindness test. DodMERB civilian contractors only do the PIP test. On I-Day, you will be given the FALANT Lantern test which is more in depth. Candidates do flunk it and get sent home. Sea services are very strict on being able to differentiate colors. There have been some outstanding posts on this site describing this.

BCDs/BCGs-Birth Control Devices/Glasses.

Is the Falant Test the same as the Farnsworth Lantern Test (The test where green, red, and white lights are shown in two color patterns)? Thanks.

Yes, same test

Dmeix, when you were tested for eyesight in week four or so of plebe summer, did they send anyone home? Also, did they test for any other conditions or only eyesight? Does USNA do anymore medical examinations other than the IDay exam and the commissining exam? In particular concern for me is blood pressure? Any input would help. Thanks.
