First I wanted to thank Mr. Mullen and everyone else on the forum who has helped me. My vision is very bad (-10 diopoters) and I was granted a waiver by USNA. I just wanted to share because I had never seen someone with myopia this bad get a waiver on these forums so I just wanted to show that there is hope!

That’s amazing! Do you mind sharing the timeline for your waiver process? I’m currently waiting on a waiver for the exact same condition.

That's awesome, congrats. Still waiting to see if mine is approved by NROTC - only correctable to 20/25, it's been 2 weeks of crickets/silence.

These waivers often take some time. Patience is a virtue....that folks don't have nowadays, but I UNDERSTAND TOTALLY!

Congratulations! My DQ was posted 09-Dec-19, so I’m still holding out hope. Best of luck to you this summer!

question: what were the status changes as you were waiting on the DoDMERB site? Was it always at "under waiver review" and then you had the "waiver granted" status show up? or did you have other status wordage show up?

DD received a waiver for history of hyperactive airways (asthma). Her portal showed "under waiver review" until a waiver was requested. Then it switched to "awaiting AMI" or something like that. Once she submitted additional information, it went to "under DoDMERB review" for a short period, and then back to "under waiver review" until the waiver was granted.

I went from “Under Waiver Review for” ~4 months to “Waiver Granted”. I was expecting to be asked for AMIs, so I was surprised to see that I recieved the waiver without them.

That's awesome that you eventually received the waiver!!!! It's always a great surprise when you are expecting less from a situation and end up with a blessing like that! Congrats again!! I was DQ'd Dec 23rd for an elective surgery for a small labrum tear...I say elective because I was told that if I wanted to continue to play baseball pain free in the future, it was better to do surgery sooner than later. Surgery was 7 months ago and now starting on my varsity baseball team again, hitting and throwing pain free! I maxed out my pull-ups and push-ups on my CFA on Dec 12th and was able to get 72' on my BB throw. Glad I had the surgery but this waiting for a potential waiver is driving me lil crazy!! I'll keep praying that either I receive a waiver OR God give me strength to accept my path He's chosen! Will see!!!!
Thank you for the input!!

Good luck!! I’m sure everything will work out no matter what happens but I hope that you receive a waiver!

USNA2024Hopeful-

you weren’t DQ for the elective surgery. You would have been DQd for the year, surgery or no, elective or no. Those reports are more favorable than not, but the decision is still up to the USNA

My daughter was measured at over -8 and was granted a medical waiver for Air Force ROTC (June 2020). The key was the eye exam itself. The concern is the possibility of a detached retina. Here is an example of the comments we received from two different eye doctors.

Summary of DOD-contracted Dilated Fundoscopic Exam with Dr. X (26 May 20)
- OD and OS Vitreous: Clear without hemorrhage, cells, or pigment.
- OD and OS Vessels: Normal contour, caliber without neovascularization.
- OD and OS Macula: Normal contour without heme, edema, drusen, or exudate.
- OD and OS Periphery: Normal appearance without retinal tears, breaks, holes, or mass.

Summary of Dilated Fundoscopic Exam with Family Eye Doctor, Dr. Y (14 May 20)
- Optic nerves, maculae, and retinal vasculature all revealed optimal ocular health.
- Retinal peripheral exam revealed no ocular pathology.
- There are no hemes, exudate, scars, opacities, or retinal degeneration.
- Of specific interest in this case, no thinning or lattice degeneration of the retina 360 (OD or OS).

Although we had great results from both exams, it important to note that the needs of each Service shift from year-to-year.

Best wishes during the process. It is long and difficult but most definitely worth the effort.

late post but my vision is bad also (-9.75 R -8.5 L) and this gives me hope for a Navy ROTC waiver
