Hi everyone. I am new here. My son, who is a Junior in HS, has begun the application process for USMA and applied to SLE. We live in SC. I am trying to find information to see if we can visit USMA--we have a visit scheduled with them for Feb 22 but due to Covid restrictions I am not sure we will be able to keep this appointment. According to New York restrictions we would need to have a negative Covid test 3 days prior to arrival in NY, then quarantine for 3 days and test again on day 4--if that test is negative we can "go about our business". However, with my work and my husbands work we cannot take this many days off. We were looking at flying into NJ and staying there--then driving to USMA for the brief 3 hour visit--then we would drive back to NJ to fly home that afternoon/eve. Our entire trip would be less than 24 hours--BUT, we want to do things the right way and follow the rules ( we are not looking to go around the system). New Jersey rules are a little more lenient than NY. Question: Could we fly to Newark, NJ, rent a car and drive to USMA the next morning, then drive back to Newark to fly home to SC that same day? SC is an unrestricted state at this time. I really think a visit will help my son to see the campus and get a small glimpse of life there. Thank you for any thoughts/help you can provide.

If you are “following the rules“ in New York, driving in from Newark is not going to comply even if NJ is contiguous to NY as you live in SC - a non-contiguous state. You still have the days long quarantine period as well as having been “out of state” more than 24 hours.

When did you schedule your USMA visit? I highly doubt your scheduled visit on 2-22-21 would be going forward at this point but maybe it will.

I would confirm with USMA that you are allowed to visit before you do anything else.

Since DS is a junior, you’re probably better off waiting. Why not see if he gets into SLE, in which case you have a perfect reason to visit (presuming SLE goes back to normal this year). And if not, there’s still many months — including the much more hospitable summer and fall — for a good and meaningful visit.

I agree with MidcakePa. This is not like a campus visit to Clemson, Furman or USC. He will get the best feel for it if he can get into SLE and experience meaningful time on campus that will mirror what life is like for Cadets at USMA. Otherwise, it's probably just a walking tour looking at pretty buildings.

Yes, I concur that it is highly doubtful that the February visit will occur. SLE will give him a much better feel for the experience anyway. We are fellow South Carolinians, and I’m sure my graduating firstie would be happy to meet with him this summer and answer any questions he might have. He should be home for a month or 2 after graduation. Once you have a few more posts you should be able to message me.

Just curious, how did you schedule a Visit? I have tried the link on the admissions website about two dozen times over the past few months and either there are no open dates or I get word that "my session has timed out" (even if I just logged in less than a minute ago). I have even tried calling admissions multiple times and always get a prerecorded message.

My son was able to click on “schedule a visit” in his online profile. He has not received step 2 yet of course. We did receive an email today that our state is restricted so no visits at this time.

Thank you, I hope to be able to PM you soon! I tried to send you a PM last night but I am not sure if it went through. Can you check and let me know? I now have 5 messages so hopefully I can. Thank you.

I emailed my RC about visitng west point a few days ago as I am still on the fence about committing to WP or USNA and while I'm leaning toward WP, i think that a campus visit could be the make or break for me in deciding to commit there. My RC said that they are resuming limited campus visits in Feb, but that they would be limited by NY state guidelines. I am from CA. I also see the schedule a visit ability on my portal. I tried calling put no answer. Do you think that I should scheudle and appointment, yet hold off on booking any flights or hotels until I am certain that we are able to go?

@Hopeful2025 My DS is in the same situation... between USMA and USNA... and would really like a campus visit to decide. Is NY guidelines the 3 day quarantine if not a surrounding state? We are from FL.

My son did schedule an appointment through his portal since Feb had spots on M, W and F. However, the next day he got an email from admissions that in person visits are halted at this time. No info on when they will resume. I am encouraged to see that NY is supposed to open up more so we will see what happens in the coming months.

NY guidelines are: negative Covid test 3 days prior to arrival, then upon arrival quarantine for 3 days—on day 4 get a second Covid test—if that one is also negative then you may “go about your business”. However, WP admissions stated they were not conducting visits at this time for restricted states—I think that is any state not contiguous to NY.

Same problem. USMA is 2nd choice for DS, only because he has never been there. At this point, he is applying and going to wait to see if he receives BFE from USMA and then we’ll see about a visit, if possible.

My DD who has received an appointment with Class of 2025 to USMA scheduled a visit mid February in her online portal late last week. On Monday she received an email canceling her visit since we are from a high risk state (Virginia.) I am really hoping that they open up visits, especially to the candidates who were accepted.
