171 Years ago tomorrow- November 11th 1839 in a light snow, Cadet John B. Strange assumed the duties of sentinel of Guard Post #1 at the Lexington Arsenal- becoming the First Cadet Sentinel at the Virginia Military Institute. Cadet Strange became Colonel Strange and was killed at the battle of South Mountain (Maryland) in 1862. His legacy lives on however as Cadets still maintain a 24 hour guard detail at VMI- rain or shine (and they undoubtedly use many of the same or similar words that Cadet Strange and his peers used to express their "joy" in doing so )
Congratulations and happy Founders Day Keydets. I hope that they let you sleep in tomorrow in honor of the event!

Guard duty...ugh. Nothing like Second Relief Sentinel in the middle of winter to make you reflect on what other college students across the country are doing at that moment. I wouldn't trade it for a minute.

Rah Virginia Mil!! and Happy 171st.

Happy birthday USMC (236 today)! And Happy Birthday VMI - 172 and looking good! And finally -thanks to all Veterans from every era out there on Veterans Day- the 93rd anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the "War to end all wars" (they missed pretty badly with that prediction:rolleyes: ).
