Curious as to if anyone has any knowledge about the VMI Institute Scholar process, selection rate, life at VMI in the honors program, or any information about it in general. Thank you!

It's a separate application. If you meet the requirements there is a strong likelihood that you'll be admitted. During your rat line you'll have an advisor for the program assigned to you and you'll have a seminar type of class, kind of like a think tank. A high GPA at VMI is very difficult, especially during your first two years. They often call your second year the academic ratline.

It may take a while. A lot of the potential institute scholars are also applying to academies. It takes a while to sort out all of the spots. Look into the Patton Scholarship as well. It sounds like you DS will be a good fit for that too. If you have any specific questions fill free to send me a PM.

Hey pshaner3,

I'm currently a member of the VMI Honors Program, and I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience in the program. The program will not drastically affect your son's curriculum in comparison to his peers. As a RAT, he will be required to take an honors forum class every semester. The forum only meets once a week and is a 0-credit class. However, it will offer your son ample opportunity to speak freely and meet other RATs and upperclassmen who are academically-orientated. When I was a RAT, I always looked forward to my honors forum classes as they gave me an opportunity to relax.

I will as DS if he applied to that, thank you!

Don’t know if it’s the Institute Scholars program or Virginia Cadetship, but one of these opportunities pays expenses and also provides a monthly stipend to the cadet—now that sounds like a great program!
