I will be attending the VMI open house this coming Friday and Saturday. The information said to dress "casual" but what does that actually mean? What would be the most appropriate type of clothing to wear? Khakis and a polo shirt?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Khakis and a polo shirt would be appropriate. For a female, you could wear a nice sweater or blouse instead of a polo. I wouldn't wear jeans, although some will. Tennis shoes are fine. You should be comfortable, but well groomed - tuck your shirt in and wear a belt.

Have fun!

Have a great visit Dancing_Falcon. We expect a full trip report. My guy left with VMI etched in his heart. (Like not a tattoo or anything creepy like that.) Good luck. Have fun. Be sure to ask all of your questions--but also listen! Enjoy.

Enjoy Lexington, It's truly a gorgeous southern town. If you have spare time recommend The VMI Museum, The Marshall Museum, the horse center, and Natural Bridge. Just writing this makes me want to do a road trip! Have fun. ;)

I have just returned from the open house, and I must say, I now know why your DS left with VMI "etched in his heart". There is nothing about VMI that I do not like, and the cadets (no longer rats because Breakout was last week) are some of the best people I have ever had the chance to meet. USAFA is and always will be my #1, but if I end up at VMI, you will not hear me complaining in the least.

Falcon, that sounds like a GREAT 'college visit.' Are you still waiting to hear from USAFA? Did you hear from Army ROTC last week? My #3 had a TWE from USMA earlier this week--it turned out to be a hard copy request for the 7th Semester Transcript (which already and finally had been sent via Naviance on Monday and unofficially via email Monday night)--but in those tense moments while he opened the envelope, he talked about VMI. No bad outcomes, only great opportunities--same to you! Glad you enjoyed it so well. Good luck with playing the waiting game.

DrMom, I am still waiting to hear from USAFA, but I have received a 4-year from AFROTC. The waiting game is hard, but it is a little easier now that I know what an amazing school my Plan B is. Good luck to your DS as well.

Congrats on the USAF scholarship: Whether you attend USAFA or VMI, sky's the limit! Of course with USAFA being the AF's academy, it has graduated numerous 4 star generals, and Chiefs of Staff, etc. You can't beat the free education and resources for cadets you'll find available in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It may be cold, but it's a great school and a great place. You'll also do well if you go to Lexington, Virginia! VMI is TOUGH, but presents tremendous, world-class opportunities for cadets. If you go to VMI, you'd be following in the footsteps of many USAF general officers, to include numerous Thunderbird pilots, Wing Commanders, MAJCOM Commanders, Surgeon Generals, along with General John Jumper, VMI Class of '66 (USAF Chief of Staff) and General Darren McDew, VMI Class of '82 (Commander of US Transportation Command).
Good news: both are great schools and you win either way, Good Luck wherever you decide!
