DS is doing the VMI overnight Friday. It says dress is casual. I have poked through the forums and I see kahki and polo recommended. DS only has one pair of kahkis. Will nice jeans and a nice shirt be acceptable? Or is there a trip to the store in my future?

Also, for parents attending are tennis shoes acceptable? I had knee surgery and I can't walk a lot in dress shoes.

Thanks.

My DS and I attended one of these back in the Fall. I thought VMI did a great job with the visit and my DS got a very good idea of what it might be like to attend VMI.

From what I remember, I think a nice shirt and jeans, especially on Saturday, would be fine. There will be some touring the grounds on Friday along with receiving briefings. Saturday was half day and was mostly spent in the auditorium. IMHO, you wearing tennis shoes will be fine. I wore dress shoes, but there was a wide variety of dress amongst the attendees and the parents.

X2 on nice shirt and jeans for the DS. Tell the DS that he is on display for the 2nds (the Juniors at VMI). there is a process for matching a RAT with a 1st (senior), some of decisions do happen on the overnights for the really good prospective cadets...and the really bad cadets. There have been some prospective cadets who have done themselves no favors during overnights. As a whole, the weekend is extremely productive and you have to be a fool to stick out in a bad way. Your DS will be provided lots of information and have lots of fun.

I'm going to a VMI overnight in a couple weeks, how should a female prospective cadet dress? What be the equivalent to a polo and khakis?

Sara -- It will be cold so dress accordingly. I remember seeing all kinds of dress during our Fall visit worn by the young men and women that were potential applicants.

Here is a VMI link that talks about appropriate attire for the Summer Transition Program that is probably also applicable: http://www.vmi.edu/content.aspx?id=10445

Below is an excerpt:

"Appropriate dress in the dining hall and in classes is as follows: for men, shoes, jeans or slacks, dress shorts, and shirts with sleeves designed for outer garment wear are required; for women, shoes, jeans, slacks, skirts, dresses, dress shorts, and blouses with sleeves designed for outer garment wear are required."

DS is in the barracks now on his overnight. We had a great day touring campus and listening to all the talks. I must say VMI is very impressive.

I agree. VMI is very impressive. And their overnight program is well thought out.

Would anyone be willing to inform me how to sign up for an overnight, I'm out of state so it might be difficult but I believe it would be very important.

And if you are going to visit, you may want to schedule an interview. VMI likes to have an interview with the student as part of the application process. It is easy to do if you are already at the school. It just needs to be set up in advance.

Call the admissions office to set this up.

Highly recommend the interview--VMI admission is getting more competitive every year, and the interview can be the tie-breaker. Best of luck and enjoy the overnight!

The first time I went to VMI I had an interview, because I was only half way through sophomore year and I didn't have that much to say. Would it be beneficial to have another interview, would it show interest or would it not be worth it?

I would recommend you call them and ask to schedule another interview for when you are there for the open house. IMHO your interview as a high school senior will probably count more than the interview you did as a sophomore, but it was good you did that interview -- you were thinking ahead! Even if they tell you no need for another interview, they will note in your file that you called to inquire. It never hurts to show genuine interest.

I am only a junior now. Should I wait until next year for a more comprehensive interview?

I think I would schedule the interview since you are going to be there. You can always go back for a third round next year if you are so inclined! ;)

As an FYI, whenever you call the college, it is noted in your record. This shows interest and a college wants to see just how interested the student is in their college/uni.
Absolutely call and ask about an interview.

He absolutely LOVED it!!! It is his solid first choice. We were bummed that the parade was canceled, but fingers crossed we will see it with him in it!!!!

Still needs his physical, which we will try to get this done next week. Then there is the financial end. If he wins an AROTC scholarship, it is doable. If not, I'm not sure how we can swing it. Out of state tuition is steep.

I love the structure, small class sizes, that the instructors all have PHD's, that they are all accessible. Love the Dyke system, that there will be someone watching out for my Rat. I like the guards on duty in the barracks. The formation and march to breakfast was really neat to watch as well.

The Civil Engineering dept head is hysterical!
All of the parents that were there to answer our questions were wonderful, welcoming and very helpful.

Everyone was so friendly. Very much unlike the Citadel wrestling coach my son tried to talk to at the hotel ( they were there for a competition, sure hope VMI won) he was pretty rude and dismissive and my son has no desire to visit the Citadel after that experience.

The Rats he stayed with told him to friend them on FB, which he did on the ride home. He felt very welcome and at home.

Fingers crossed DS will be there on Matriculation day.

Sounds like you had a great visit just like we did...Best of luck you and your DS

Do most people do this visit in their junior or senior year?? It's tough to schedule a visit because of football in the fall and lacrisse in the spring! (I'm a junior by the way!) sounds like your visit was great!
