VMI Prospective Cadet

I just returned from the VMI open house and it was GREAT! The rat that was watching over me took me to every room on the 4th stoop to meet everyone, then we spent like an hour in the px just talking. I had all my questions answered, plenty of tips for the rat year, but also made some new friends. The only downside I find with VMI is the lack of girls =/ I mean how are you suppose to find dates to the dances and stuff! One guy was telling me how they sneak out to JMU/Gmu? Forgot which one? And party over their (apparently they have really cool dykes who leave from their windows). Some rats were also saying that this was also why a lot of people quit. They get tired of hearing bout their old friends partying away at their old colleges, while there just at vmi. But every school has their ups and downs and this is still my top choice!

Lophat - what you are describing is called "running the block" and you better find an awesome woman to make it worth the potential downside which is a number one (4 months confinement; 60 demerits and 60 penalty tours I believe) if you get caught. I never heard of a rat doing that and certainly never heard of one doing that this early in the game:eek:

Yep the disparity between males and females definitely leaves lots of guys scrabbling for dates. James Madison (JMU) is in Harrisonburg- 60 miles away; Mary Baldwin is a womens college in Staunton about 35 miles north and VaTech is 90 miles south so there are sources of dates not off the map- But it is a definite drawback.
Glad you had a productive weekend.

Yeah, there was this guy from "Brotel" that gets his father alumni to take him out Friday nights or something to go drinking. Hotel company is pretty chill, but they all said I'm going to Golf cause of my height.

I can tell you as a current rat that no one I know has run the block or even talked about it, and doing so would be really, really stupid. Also- what company you go into isn't absolute. Bravo and Golf are the same height, and Foxtrot (FYI they'll whine if you don't call them f-troop) and Charlie are all about the same, maybe just an inch shorter on average.

I seem to remember a thread on here from last spring (when we were preparing to visit VMI with our son for open house) warning prospective cadets to "reign it in" during your visit, because this year's Rats will be next year's Cadre. Rah VA Mil may want to weigh in on this, but I seem to remember her citing the example of a prospect whose question "how are the girls over at Washington & Lee?" got him into trouble when he returned as a Rat. My Rat son reported some "stoop poop" to me over New Market weekend about some Rats who came in thinking they were going to game the system and didn't make it past the first two days.

My advice: if partying is high on your list of priorities, VMI (or any of the SMCs or Academies) may not be the right place for you. There may be more opportunities to party when you get higher up the food chain, but for Rats, not so much.

Good luck!

Ok and I just called them to schedule an interview, but apparently you do not have to do one if you have Alumni Recommendations.

Can someone explain the Adopt a Cadet thing for the churches? Do you go in your uniform cause I heard that you only have one pair of civi clothes.

I still will apply to VMI for ED, like I said it has its up and downs but I see the lack of "partying" to be alright with me. I also like all the physical electives they have as well and Pugil sticks!

Bruno- They were just telling me about what their dykes told them what they can do after breakout, but it's still a long way. the First class seems pretty cool, I was passing a room coming back from the px and there was a guy with a projector playing some new Halo game with fellow cadets.

Lophat-
You are going to do everything in uniform- you will have access to zero Civilian clothes your entire fourth class year. The deal about getting adopted by a local church is really up to that church- I know that Rats go to church in much higher numbers than do the other three classes however just because the Churches in town know the deal that the Rats are under. Many have sponsor families or programs to "adopt" a Rat and invite them out for dinner after Church on sunday etc... Used to get virtually all of our phone calls home from my son after church on sunday from his sponsor family. It was a nice, voluntary deal.
Trust me - as a Rat you will not be partying pretty much ever and like I said- you can always run the block - but get caught and it's a hard day all around. So- like most things you learn to weigh the odds and decide if the rewards outweigh the potential punishment.

Some of the first class are "cool"- You may not think so though when you meet the members of the Rat Disciplinary Committee  In fact as a Rat- not too many folks are cool other than your classmates and your "dyke".

Hey, who'd you stay with? I know a few of the rats in Hotel.

Hey brother,
Im a Brother Rat of Jackie's and I stumbled on this site looking for a print to a Norman Rockwell painting (long story).
Basically, don't worry about getting into VMI, you seem fine; far better than I was when I applied (multiple times) all those years ago.

It'll be an interesting experience for you. I certainly would not be where I am in life right now if it weren't for VMI. I've accomplished more than I ever wanted thanks to the guidance of some senior cadets and many professors. That being said, I gotta be honest, VMI has its issues, but as you try to do the right thing and not let the school get you down, you'll do fine and you'll get alot out of the education. Good Luck.

The only thing that is hard is trying to keep a relationship. Any advice? She will still be in high school when I go to college
