Hello!

I have been accepted into VMI, and am excited about going there if I am not accepted into the Coast Guard Academy.

I am confused about the VFT at VMI. I have heard a bunch of different things from different people and different websites and am not sure what is accurate or not.

1) If someone does not pass the VFT when they matriculate, are they kicked out of VMI?

2) If you are going to VMI on an AROTC Scholarship, are there any physical standards you need to meet when you matriculate (I've heard that you need to meet them right away, and I've also heard you need to meet them before you're a sophomore)?

Thank you!

Congrats on your VMI appointment!

You will need to pass the VFT (VMI Fitness Test), which is given once per semester. If you do not pass it you will be placed on remedial for extra physical training. You wouldn't be kicked out immediately but given extra training to help you pass it....and you will eventually need to pass it. I am not sure how long rats/cadets remain in remedial before further action would be taken - I am guessing that they would expect progress.

You will also have to pass the PFT for your chosen branch (in your case Army). While I am not familiar with the Army standards, I do know that you must pass the Army PFT in order to contract and have your scholarship activated. You will lose your scholarship if you cannot pass the PFT.

It is in your best interest to be in the best physical shape you can get before Matriculation, starting now. You have five months before Matriculation - you can do it!

Thank you so much- I appreciate you sorting this out for me.

^^^Take this advice and show up in the best shape you can at matriculation. It will make your life as a Rat a little more manageable. I started typing a little easier, but there is nothing about your Rat year that will be easy. You will be pushed beyond what you now think are your limits. Show up in shape, stay positive and don't take anything too personally. Good luck.

Thank you so much. I'm in good shape now (I'm not perfect, but I meet Army standards)--the primary thing I need to work on are the pull ups, those are really difficult for me.

You have time to work on pullups, especially if you are already in good shape. If you have access to a personal trainer at a local gym or at your school they should be able to help. Also, search this forum for tons of advice on improving pullups with negative pullups and other tips and check out this link posted by CAPT MJ in a previous thread on the topic: http://www.stewsmith.com/linkpages/serviceacademycfa.htm

Your goal should be to max out all standards. Good luck.

Pull ups are important for Army/Air Force PT standards but you are going to be doing mostly push ups, situps, and running at first. You have plenty of time so if you have access to a pull up bar, get a baseline of what you can do, do that twice a day, and try to increase by 1 rep per week. Really not that difficult a goal and you will be in fine shape come matriculation. Congrats on your acceptance...it's a terrible place to be at, but an amazing place to be from!
