I am not going to be able to make one of the open house dates for VMI until spring of next year. I have applied for a ROTC scholarship with VMI as my second choice, so I have scheduled a meeting with an admission counselor for my fall break (I am a high school senior). Can anyone tell me me what to expect from one of those type meetings and what to wear? Will it include any tour or do I need to schedule one of those as well? Thanks so much!

Dress in what they call "business casual" - so slacks and a collared shirt or equivalent blouse would be appropriate attire . The admission's department is very approachable, so if you tell them you would like a tour- they will get you a tour of the post. Go in prepared to sell yourself and definitely tell them what makes you interested in VMI. They will want to hear that you are interested in the military, but make sure that you don't give the impression that you are only interested in that because at the end of the day- it is a college you are applying to not the Army, so make sure that you can talk about what you are interested in academically and athletically as appropriate and ask questions. They won't make you feel uncomfortable- it will be an easy yet informative interview, but they will be taking away their impressions of you as much as you will be learning about VMI; so give them the feeling that you really would like to be a Cadet at VMI. Good luck!

Have a one page resume' to leave with admissions about yourself that has the following:

Your name, address and contact info centered at the top. Nice Photo in an upper corner is a nice plus

Next, provide a brief statement why you want to go to VMI, and if you're planning to go into the military, why you want to serve

Next, good to state desired major . . . this can change once you arrive

Next section, include your current GPA/class rank, and your ACT/SAT Super Scores

Next, include any athletics, varsity letters, team captain, band, drama, JROTC, CAP, Boy/Girl Scouts, Boys/Girls State, class officer or club officer, church/community service leadership positions or activities

Last, if you have published articles, received awards, this is a good place to list those items along with any links to articles that might talk about you in the local paper

Optional -- Page 2 can be a collage of pics of you "in action" doing athletics, band, school plays, community service, etc.
