I will be attending the VMI STP this summer, and I have a few questions that were not answered in any of the emails or information that I was provided with.
1. Will i have the same roomates during the year as i have during stp
2. Should i label my items
3. My lock box is a hand me down from my sister, and she covered it with stickers, should I take them off, or can I leave them on the box?
4. Should I shine the boots that they provide? And should I bring a shining kit with me?
5. Am I allowed to bring books with me? If so how many?
6. What am I allowed to keep in my lock box?

No you wont have roommates from STP during rat year. Rat year you will room with 2 to 4 classmates in your company.

Labelling is on you and a good idea given laundry on your own. One caution is if using linens or clothes rat year you will label them during cadre week with your laundry number in a very proscribed way.

Your call on lock box stickers.

You can bring books. STP is very relaxed not military or the ratline and lots of down time.

Boots are desert pattern not black leather so not for shining.

No knowledge of or about anything VMI-related but this was a DARN good, informative post and I now feel I know at least something about VMI!

Now... my question is, what does STP stand for?

Scientifically Treated Petroleum???

You could bring your shining kit with you (you definitely don't need to) for your low quarters. Your boots will be more comfortable than those. And don't worry about the fashion look of shorts and dress shoes, you won't be the only one. I'd take the stickers off of the box, not so much for the summer, but I'd want to blend as much as possible during the rat line. Not a huge deal but something to consider.

3. stickers - up to you - that said - you don't want to stand out.
4. won't shine boots but you will need to shine your low quarters
5. lock box is for medication, wallet etc.
 
Hey, rising second here:

I don’t want to rain on your parade, but there’s a chance that STP might be moved to an online setting due to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic. GEN Peay should be out with a final decision by the end of April. Keep your fingers crossed!

In the mean time, keep your grades up and start running. VMI has some pretty nasty hills.
 
Also, don’t worry about the shining stuff. All of the necessary “cadet” knowledge will be taught to you during your first week as a rat.
 
Hey, rising 1/C here. In no particular order:

I wouldn't worry about taking shining gear to STP, in the interest of flying under the radar. Your cadre will teach you how to shine shoes (and do literally everything else) during matriculation week.

I wouldn't worry about labeling things. In 99 cases out of 100, everyone knows what is theirs. If not, it's a rather straightforward conversation. Your PT uniform will have your laundry number on it, and everything will get stenciled during matriculation week.

I would adhere to "fly under the radar" when it comes to stickers. Just my $0.02.

The lock box is for medication or wallets, or other valuables. During rat year I used it to keep bandages, moleskin, aloe, and tylenol. Just stuff to tend to the minor bangs and bruises.

I would recommend books during STP.

You won't have the same roommates during STP that you will have during the regular year. The Commandant's Staff tries to space STP rats to about 1 per room.
