Hi there!
I'm a current rat at the Virginia Military Institute. For any prospective students, or anyone who just wants to know about the Institute, ask any questions you may have, within reason of course, and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability! It may take a day or two, but I'll try my best to get to any questions anyone asks.
Thank you!

Thanks for paying it forward. How is the overall experience compared to what you were expecting? Are all of your classes in person or is it a mix of virtual/in person due to Covid?

Good luck!

I appreciate the kind words! Overall, it is harder than I was expecting. I went to the Summer Transition Program, and that was fun, so I think it gave me a false sense of security in a way. Hell week was by far the hardest thing I've ever done, much harder than expected, but I got through it and I'm proud to be here. All of my classes are in person thankfully.
Thank you!

My son is currently a rat. He's enjoyed every moment of it. Now that academics are full speed ahead, we don't hear from him much. We just pray that he's now doing his part and studying as much as he needs to. Can't wait to see that kid in October for Parent's weekend. I echo the previous poster , although your intentions were good , I would stay off here and focus on your studies. From what I understand, there is zero time for stuff like this forum.
Either way , best of luck to you!

How is the food there?

When I was a Rat, we didn’t even have time to taste the food. Who had the time to determine if it was good or not? You just ate it before the corporal at the end of the table decided to ask you to recite the parapet.

Rats know this going in, am I right?

Not this one, sir.
I was naive. I thought all VMI was about wearing the same clothes everyday, eating at the same time as everyone, and getting a set block of time to study every night before being told to go to bed.
Had no idea about the Ratline and food that we didn’t have time to taste. 😊

I Have heard our rat complain about the food since he arrived on campus this year. I could not wait to eat at Crozet Hall during parent's weekend. I thought it was OK. Of course, all the rats said they made it better for parent's weekend. We send him enough protein on the side to hopefully make up for it. We love the culture at VMI. My son loves the culture. I know it's gone through a lot of changes, but VMI is a wonderful place for a young person that wants to challenge themselves. Looking forward to many more road trips over the next four years.

Enjoy the ride. My DS is a first and I'll miss that place terribly. I'm considering retiring to Lexington, I'll eat at one of the many fine restaurants in town instead of Crozet. :)
