VMI - Rat mass of 2013+3

The easiest would be to fly into Roanoke which is 50 miles from Lexington. I think that there is an airport limo that will drive you to Lexington. While flights into Roanoke are usually pretty steep- that's not always the case with some lead time and if you go on expedia etc... you might be able to find a reasonable fare.

My DS is a 4th there...we fly him in/out of Roanoke and there is a great shuttle service that picks up and drops off the Cadets at VMI (among other places)...we are in CO so usually either United or US Airways (makes sure to do their mileage program) which goes from Roanoke to Charlotte, NC and then over to DIA....your path may be a little different since you are heading to So Cal tho...Roanoke is an easy in/out airport--small so no long waits typically as security and enough flights out later in the evening so you can leave after CAD. Shuttle is like $35 each way but they are friendly, polite and do a good job!
Congratuations on getting into VMI! It will be tough but even my DS said he wouldn't change a thing and has no plans of transferring anywhere else!

Yeah, I got my acceptance letter in mid January- after being glued to the mailbox for 3 months. It was definitely a waiting game, and I did have my doubts since I'm transferring from a CC, but after I received it...man, there is no feeling to describe it, it was so awesome! I'm pretty excited about STP, it'll definitely be a great way meeting all my BR's. From the looks of it, there is a lot of people from out of state. :thumb: Can't wait to meet you all, and matriculate with y'all in the fall.

Hi there - my DS will also be flying to Roanoke for the STP. Do you happen to know the name of the $35 shuttle service ? Can that be arrranged ahead of time ? Thanks !

This is who we have used--there are probably others but Jay always answered my questions as a first time VMI mom ;)

Roanoke Airport Transportation..they work with the VMI cadets a lot and usually have several on their shuttle to Lexington :) I always talk to Jay at roanokeats@aim.com

Guard duty on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in 3d Barracks- Rat Mass of 2016- your future awaits you!

You rats are in for it...

I just broke out this year. You rats have no idea what your in for believe me, I thought i did before but you never know till you do it. Your rat mass is lucky however, you all don't have to "eat like rats" (basically squared meals while getting yelled at) for the whole rat line like every other class before you. They say it is getting outlawed or something... This is very pathetic, eating was the worst thing about the rat line for the most part and they are depriving you rats of it. Hopefully it will still be hard elsewhere, you want it to be hard, thats why people come here. And if you don't want it hard, you won't make it here...

enjoy your summer, we are waiting for you hahah.

Interesting, the incoming rats will no longer have to "eat like rats" (squared meals) -- anyone know if this rumor is true?

Rumors like this crop up every year. Just the nature of the beast.

I could go to great lengths to describe how what last year's rats went through was nothing compared to my Ratline, but then sprog would have to come in and tell me what a joke my Ratline was compared to his, and then Bruno would have to pretend to be outraged that sprog had it so easy.

In the end, I'm not too worried. The Ratline is a little different each year, but it still sucks. Honestly, I feel like Ratline and Breakout comparisons from year to year are shortsighted at best.

Proven fact - the last hard Ratline was your own and the Corps immediately went to hell the day after you graduated. Let me tell you- back in the old days- the Barracks were heated by wood- the First Class were made of Iron and the Rats were lucky to be alive at the end of it all:rolleyes:

Don't worry-the Ratline for the new Rat mass will be sufficiently challenging to make you question your choice of college for a while- then it will be an interesting challenge, then a source of pride. (And when you go back for your reunions- every year it will get harder in the telling!)

STP-looks like registration is Monday, the 2nd. I am flying to Roanoke, but can't get an arrival early enough on Monday. Does anyone know if I can show up on Sunday?

Do you absolutely critically need 3 credits of foreign language to be accepted Into VMI?

Yeah I received an email from the director and he said it would be open on Sunday but just to notify him if that's the case.

I just created a facebook group "VMI - Rat Mass 2016" here is the link.

http://www.facebook.com/groups/152045991593848/

For those of you who have facebook, please feel free to join. This will be a great way to start contacting each other before STP and also for discussing prep, packing supplies, etc. Inform all of the incoming Rats that you know of - the more the merrier!

I'm all in favor of social media- but just a word of caution. Too much pre-matriculation publicity has a way of boomeranging on you. If you guys are going to have a facebook page, I would suggest you be very circumspect about what you post, and for heavens sake don't be talking up your superior PT skills, Rat Knowledge, how you are going to blow the doors off barracks because of your awesomeness etc... More than just your fellow Rats may be reading that stuff. Just remember- anonymity is your friend.

Frankie,
You do not absolutely need three language credits to gain an appointment to VMI. I only took two years of Latin. I did however replace that void in my schedule left by Latin with AP courses. As long as you have a challenging schedule you should be fine without three years of foreign language.

chosenhunter7, it's funny that you mention how easy the rats are going to have it this year; I remember how they let the rats walk everywhere this past year (including Rat Challenge) and let you guys get ice cream and cake from Crozet.

Professors Bring Oldies to Barracks

For those who think that life in Barracks is always universally grim comes the article below. ("This Didn't happen back in the Old Corps I'll tell you. Back then, the Math and Engineering faculty would pound rocks against our heads to create a beat! The Corps has gone to Hxxx I tell you!" .)

Playing for the cadets for only their second time on April 27, the professors got everyone’s attention by setting up directly in front of Washington Arch in the Old Barracks Courtyard. With hits such as “Jet Airliner” by the Steve Miller Band, “Just What I Needed” by the Cars, “Shattered” by the Rolling Stones, and “I Will Survive” by CAKE, they held the Corps’ attention for a couple of hours that Friday afternoon.

A party atmosphere prevailed as cadets from all classes “loitered” on the stoop, lounging in chairs or leaning on the rail, sporting hats, sunglasses, and other leisure attire, most especially bathrobes. A game of “stickball,” in truest barracks tradition, enhanced the festive spirit of this late-semester event, so that cadets entering the courtyard inevitably stopped to listen.
