I've been reading some older threads on here and many have been saying VMI's rat year is harder than West Point's plebe year. Can some VMI alum/cadets provide some input as to what may make it more difficult and can some WP alum/cadets provide some input as to what may make plebe year more difficult, or anybody who has some good input on the subject. (I am in no way trying to prove one school better than the other, I simply just want to know what you guys think).

They’re different experiences, and they’re both tough in their own ways. My take based on my personal experience at West Point and stories from colleagues who attended VMI is that VMI rat year is “harder” because they still do much more of the old school, make your life difficult for no reason but to make it difficult because you’re on the bottom of the totem pole, that USMA has outgrown in some aspects with its move from an attrition based system to fourth class development system over the last couple decades. Tradition is great...when it serves a purpose

Not too sure about VMI, but if you graduate from West Point, you will be active duty. This might be something to consider because I know people from ROTC who prefer reserve or national guard.
