So far I have been accepted to VMI for the upcoming year, but as an out-of-stater I'm worried about the financial burdens for my Mother to take in loans. I was wondering how the SMP works and I read that if I join the Virginia National Guard that I can get in-state which would make VMI so much more doable, so is this true? and who do I need to talk to about this?

VT provides the above email address. He is a member of the Virginia National Guard. I found him helpful.

VMI will tell you to speak with Maj. Crider. Good luck with that. He didn't return my emails nor phone messages.

I'm actually not sure MAJ Crider is still in the Army department..but when you go through MSI year, the assistant instructor, SFC Bart (his title according to the VMI email database is RRNCO- Recruiting and Retention Non-Commissioned Officer) is involved with getting cadets into SMP. So yes, it is doable. The only stipulations I know of are you must go to drill with VARNG, and you must maintain a certain GPA. I put SFC Bart's email address above, so you may want to send him an email. Hope this helps!

SFC Bart is the one to contact at VMI. Let me know if you have any trouble getting a hold of him or if you want to connect with a current SMP cadet at VMI. I know a few, and I'd be happy to get you in touch with them.

It's definitely a good option, but as with any choice you make in life, it has both pros and cons. The SMP can take up a lot of time, but if you're serious about going into the military, it will provide an opportunity to get more experience than you would as a traditional ROTC student. A lot of this will depend on what unit you drill with, but that in and of itself will help prepare you for the Army. :thumb:

Good luck!
