Vmi thoughts

VMI is a great school and would prepare him well if his goal is to commission to the AF, however I personally would not want to see my son go into huge debt to attend. Has he looked at what VMI can offer for financial aid? My son went to VMI and we were out of state. They offered a pretty generous financial aid package, then he received a 4 yr ROTC scholarship, so they pulled the aid. The ROTC scholarship made if affordable for my son and we were able to help him out with other costs not covered by the scholarship so he graduated debt free.

If your son feels the full ride state school offers the major and other opportunities he needs to be successful then I would advise going that route rather than going into debt to attend VMI.

If you and/or he can afford it and he does decide on VMI, make sure he knows what he is getting into. It's a great school but it is definitely not for everyone. My son thrived on the challenges there and has no regrets that he went to VMI, but it is definitely tough in many ways.

Good luck and feel free to PM with questions if I can help.
In the same boat, but not expecting ROTC to come through. DS wants to attend VMI out of state but cost is too high. Curious to what sort of assistance off of the sticker price they offered? In terms of percentages. Any estimates would help as I know all situations are different.

My son got great money from Norwich. He did earn a 3 year ROTC scholarship, so we only have to cover year 1, then they cover room and board while his scholarship is active. Norwich has a guarantee to beat offers from other privates or OOS, and they actually beat the other college my son was looking at. Norwich started at $63k and came in about $20k with his scholarships and the $5,500 federal loan. That's as good as we could have expected given we don't qualify for any need-based aid. Need to check out The Citadel and see if the financial aid award is any better because we can send it to Norwich and they will review it against their offer. My son was 100% sure he wanted a corp of cadets lifestyle so it was really important to us to try to get him there.

in short none. completely need based. Fafsa gave us 5500 even after that, with tuition room and board, uniform fees and other charges we were just north of 60K. If you get a type 2 scholarship it will cover 18K max so you are left with the slim chance you'll get a type1 or 3.

same with my DS. we looked at a state school and rotc, but he wants corps of cadets. He is also very set on getting int to the academy so if he doesnt make it this year, he will like do the SAP program at Marion Military institute and then if he still doesnt recieve an appointment, we are going to talk about re-applying to Texas A&M as he technically got in this year but was wait listed due to the huge freshman turnout and the fact that he applied very late as an alternative to the USAFA. we will have to see over the next few weeks how all this shakes out. headed to MMI this week to check it out.

VMI is DD first choice if she isn’t accepted into service academy. She received a scholarship of 17,000. We are from out of state, so even with the scholarship, it is currently not feasible for us unless she receives army rotc scholarship . Norwich was extremely generous with their offer to her . She was also accepted into the Citadel but we have not heard anything about a scholarship award. We didn’t qualify for need based financial aid .

If your DD is interested in attending The Citadel, you should contact the Financial Aid Office and let them know. Merit aid for out-of-state applicants is quite competitive, however, they do make awards to bring in a diverse 4th Class. Worth a call. If DD does receive an ROTC scholarship, the college awards Room & Board and for 3 year awards, it will cover 1st year tuition. Best of luck to her.

I believe that the very high out of state tuition, with relatively low scholarships, is why VMI is trending toward higher percentage of in-state students. VMI is a terrific school, but Norwich and Citadel are out-competing VMI among SMC's for students from the other 49+ states and territories. I'm a proud Virginian and VMI Dad and I would like to see ROTC room and board supplements at VMI; like Norwich (and El Cid just announced).

I agree, but this is all new for The Citadel this year. The Citadel and VMI have always lagged behind Norwich in terms of financial assistance. I was very pleased to see the Citadel make the changes they did this year. My guess is that VMI will also re-evaluate their financial aid supplements. I will be the 1st in line to donate for a fund at VMI to pay for room and board as well as 1st year tuition for 3 year winners. Its all a competition and VMI will get it all sorted out.
