Hello, I have been accepted to and plan on attending Virginia Military Institute next fall, to be a part of the Rat Mass of 2016+3. I am doing everything I can to be as prepared as possible, but I realize that it is impossible to be fully prepared.
I am just asking for any VMI alumni or anyone with knowledge of VMI to post anything they think will be helpful. Also, for alumni, would you share any interesting memories or experiences that you had during your years at the Institute? Thanks!

My name is DONALD HERNDON. on Aug 8, 1943, I was introduced to the 4th stoop. I was a 17 year old army enlistee who been selected to take part in the ASTP(Army Specialized Traiinng Program). Col. Fray was Commandant. D-day was almost a year away. Later I graduated from OCS at Ft. Benning and a few weeks later I joined the 106th Div. in the Ardennes. I was commissioned on Dec 6, 1944 at the age of 18 years, 10 months, 22 days. Good Luck, Don

--Great message Mr. Herndon! Believe it or not, Mel Brooks did this same program at VMI.

Future -- IMHO preparing yourself to get selected to attend VMI (or any other SMC) is a bit like preparing for a SA. Here is the link to the "Class Profile" for the Class of 2019: http://www.vmi.edu/media/content-assets/documents/admissions/Profile-Class-of-2019.pdf

First, recommend you work on your grades. Work to get a high GPA each year of high school. When the time comes, work to achieve a high SAT/ACT score. Participating in and showing achievement within JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, and/or Boy Scouts are good things. Participating in (or better yet leading) community service activities is a good thing Also, work to achieve leadership positions within your activities such as becoming an officer in a school or church club. Lettering in varsity athletics and being selected as a Team Captain is also good.

Last, work on your fitness.

You should get very familiar with the VMI website -- it tells you what you need to do. If you can, go visit VMI for an overnight visit once you are a Sophomore or Junior in High School.

My son graduated in 2015.. He planned well in advance for the task as well. It is never a bad thing. Take hard classes in high school...heavy math and science. Take on leadership roles wherever you can. Keep yourself fit.... I was visiting my DS at VMI and I arrived on post just after he completed a run. He said "I thought it impossible to leave post running up hill and yet finish the run back on post still running up hill, yet it happens all the time:)"...he also could knock out 10 pull ups according to his buddies at the gym, but when he got to VMI...according to VMI, he could only do 3 correctly which meant remedial PE for a semester until he got where he needed to be.. prepare your parents for the financial possibility if you dont get an ROTC scholarship...and have a plan B...good luck!
