Does anyone know if the VP is still accepting nomination applications for class of 2018? His website states that you should apply from March to January preceding your year of entrance... but the order of those months suggests that you can still apply in March of the year you're due to enter.
I sent one in, but the wording was very ambiguous. Thanks!

I believe the deadline for VP nominations for c/o 2018 is January 31st. They are given out in March, IIRC.

YES I STILL HAVE A CHANCE. Thank you so much. This past weekend has pretty much been the worst of my whole life.

January 31, 2014 is also the final date for VP nomination application for class of 2018. Also, FYI - DS got a letter from the Department of the Navy on Friday indicating that "The Naval Academy has been notified that you have requested a Vice Presidential Nomination for the class of 2018." It looks like a form letter since DS had is application completed by 15 Sept. and this letter says "Please ensure that you complete your application....by January 31, 2014." He applied for VP nom back in October, if memory serves me correctly.

I assume others got this letter but haven't seen it mentioned in other threads.

DS just got the same letter. His app was completed end of July.

DD just got the same letter.

Anyone know if VP nominations competitive or principle?

VP noms are "controlled" by the individual SAs for whom they are available (USAFA, USNA, and USMA). That means the SA decides who gets the VP nom/appointment. This, of course, differs from MOC noms where the MOC makes the nom decision and the SA decides on the appointments.

Because of the above, the concept of "principal" is moot/not applicable for the VP nom. Obviously, the SA will only offer the nom to a candidate if it plans to give that individual an appointment. If the person chosen decides not to accept that appointment, the SA moves on to the next person on its list.

So, in practice, it works like a principal with ranked alternates but isn't really handled the same way because all of the decision-making is vested with the SA.

Thanks for the quick follow-up and clarification.

Is there anything to be "read into" the letter that my DD got about being considered for a VP nomination (i.e., USNA is getting very interested in her) or is it simply a standard form letter that goes out to everyone who applies for the VP nom?

It caught us by surprise as DD already has a competitive nom for USNA from our MOC.

I believe it's a standard letter. If your DD has an MOC nom, it's unlikely she'll get a VP nom. Those are typically reserved for candidates who -- for various reasons -- do not obtain a nom through another source.

I think it's just an informational letter confirming that nomination is available if needed/chosen for it.

My DS has 2 MOC noms showing up.

Just giving the academy another option to choose from on appointment slots.

My DS applied for the VP Nomination during the Gov't shutdown in October. There was some message on the website about no one monitoring the website during the shutdown. He got worried and emailed USNA about whether they had received his VP Nom request. They told him they get a list of VP Nom applicants from the White House "once a quarter." So, I'm guessing all those letters that were sent out were for anyone that applied for the VP Nom from 1 October through 31 December.

Did anyone receive a similar letter from USMA? DS applied to VP for a nom to both USMA and USNA -- got the letter from USNA. Haven't heard anything from USMA. Just wondering....

My DS applied for USAFA and USMA. Completed the VP nomination paperwork in October but has not received any emails regarding it that I'm aware of.

As soon as I clicked submit, I received an email stating that my application had been received.

My DS recieved a nom from MOC in CA-25 which is a very competitive are here in Los Angeles. The representative from the comgressmans office told us it was not the principal nom but that my DS is very high on the list. being 2nd or 3rd on a competitive list is not the best news so would applying for VP nom make sence even though we have a nom. Thanks

Yes. The more help you can give the academy in terms of slotting your appointment to a nomination, the more chance you might have to get an appointment... assuming you're DS is someone they are interested in appointing.
