My DS will be attending Virginia Tech this fall and a member of the Corps of Cadets /Army ROTC. They are selling a New Cadet Kit at the school's bookstore for $136. Does anyone know if this is a decent value, or should we go buy all the myriad of items at Walmart or a similar store to save money? I'm not sure how much you would save, if any at all. Anyone with information or experience please chime in. Thank you.

My DS will also be a freshman in the VTCC this year. We went back and forth on whether or not to buy the kit. We ended up buying the items separately. We will get the hat plastic at the bookstore on move-in day.

I'm in the VTCC. DEFINITELY GET THE KIT!!!!! Any more questions? New cadet week is right around the corner!

Oh man!! Sorry, my email had a delay. Going on Hokiespa to check now, thanks.

No problem man. I'm on vtcc2021parents.ning.com and as far as I know they haven't been released yet. It will probably be later in the day.

Hi again - we went ahead and ordered the kit. Because of the distance, we're having to fly in with most of her stuff and then pre-purchase some items for pickup in VA before arriving at campus. It was just way more convenient for us to just get the kit and pick it up at the bookstore on move-in morning - although everybody says that you can do it either way (buy individually or the kit) and no advantage or disadvantage other than time. We did hear that you should go buy another bottle of Brasso, though, as the one that comes in the kit is *somehow* not up to par (?).

Just saw that. I checked HokieSPA, but doesn't show roommate on the website just the spreadsheet, same for you?

There are two spreadsheets. The first one is in alphabetical order and the second one is in building/room number order. Find your name on the first list to see what room number you are in and then look on the second list to see who your roommate is.

Brasso is not used to clean our brass, it will not work well. It actually works well for everything BUT brass. Look for Mother's Aluminum polish, cylindrical red and white container.

Thanks for the tip. I will make sure we pick some up. What about Nevr-Dull? We used it to shine our brass 30 years ago.

I've never heard of it to be honest so I couldn't comment on it, sorry.

Buy the kit, wife and I tried Walmart vs Amazon and quickly found it painful, costing just as much. "Hat plastic" is well hidden in the main bookstore, we had a blast chasing that down for our other son. Hold on to your hats, HELL WEEK approacheth! Let's go Hokies!
