Wait List

My DD was waitlisted this morning. Guessing those on that list are ranked too. Does anyone know if it can be asked where one is on the list? If there truly are 100 on the list, thinking better to go with plan B if number 99 vs. number 3...

I’m really happy to be on the wait list and I was honestly shocked to receive that decision. It is a funny situation for me to be in though as a third time applicant. There is a chance for me to go on summer cruise from May to June, hear back from USNA, and then go to Plebe summer. That would definitely be up there in the weirdest things to happen to a candidate, but I did joke about that happening earlier in the year.

I’m guessing they may not tell you precisely but my plan has been for DS (if waitlisted or appointed conditionally) to try and have a live convo with his admissions contact later this week. He has another offer pending and would need to very seriously think about how best to handle the situation - so I figured a try at gaining info couldn’t hurt.

I got wait listed for USNA too, but I got into USAFA. If I accept that appointment from USAFA, is there any way to get out of it if I do end up getting into USNA in May? If not that's fine, I'd happily just accept Air Force, but I'm curious.

From reading other sources online, I found that you would be able to accept USNA if you were to get appointed after the May 1st deadline. You truly are not committed to attending a service academy until you take the oath of office. If this is wrong please correct me, but that is the information I found after reading online.

You’d think wait list appointments would be a near final step in the process. Not that my DS has heard anything yet but I can’t see how they designate wait list without knowing who they are offering and who they are declining.
I would speculate that for schools where the yield is somewhat unpredictable, this may be necessary and this year, this may apply even more so given the crazy year it's been.

However, the academies have such a high yield rate (very few people decline) they are probably in a pretty good position to predict and plan (i.e. build a waitlist) even before all the outcomes of the May 1st deadline. I think this is true for T10 schools as well, it's a very small percentage that decline the offer.

Congratulations to those on the waitlist and finger's crossed. Interested to see what the rest of this week holds for everyone. Good luck to all the candidates.

I told my husband this morning that our son must now be in one of two pools now: waiting for MOC notification of a yes (assuming they are giving them time to notify) or waiting for a twe. Time will tell but I hope it’s not much more time!
These two sentences have just made my anxiety double. I really hope we won't be waiting for much longer.

Is it possible to receive an appointment to the Prep School after being placed on the waitlist, or does the waitlist mean you aren't getting a NAPS slot at all?

Answering a couple of questions above . . . USNA says they do not rank the WL. Of course, at some point, if they take anyone from the WL, they have to decide which are the top. But maybe they wait to make that decision until they see whether they need to take anyone. For those on the WL, some years zero people come off and in other years, some do receive appointments off the WL. It's totally dependent on yield.

Generally, being put on the WL means you will not be offered an appointment to NAPS or Foundation, as I believe there are separate WLs for those programs. I will never say "never" as in never happens, but I've never heard of someone on the WL being offered NAPS or Foundation.

A similar question was asked at Candidate Visit Weekend which we attended with our DS a couple of years ago. The Admissions Officer explained that the USNA Wait List doesn't really work that way with a sequence of straight ranked candidates to pick from. Instead, if a class slot opens up due to someone declining their offer of appointment (or will not attend for other possible reasons) , Admissions will normally first look to the decliner's state (and district, if possible) for a Wait List replacement.

I suspect that there are exceptions to this scenario depending upon various circumstances - and this year may be different anyway. Good luck to all on the Wait List!

Yes. People do it all the time. You're not committed til I day when you sign.

Our youngest came from the waitlist last year. Mid May. Last yield, waitlisters were required to affirm to an email that they wished to remain on the list. That was around this same time of year.

As time went on, the waitlist was whittled down. Some received appointments, most TWE’s.

One thing to keep in mind, as already stated, is that these candidates aren’t ranked, where the top come off first. It’s more of a holding pool as states are settled woth the finality of May 1st acceptance deadlines, conditional appointments are worked through, etc.

DS was appointed right before graduation ceremonies. We had to scramble to get his graduation info all changed for recognitions.
We contacted his Plan B school, disenrolled, received all but $30 in deposited back (non-refundable application fee), booked a flight and headed to Annapolis.

You can search for prior year waitlist threads, to see chatter about timing, and tc, if that’s your jam. Hang in there!!!!

I was offered Waitlist this morning as well. It is a lot better decision from USNA than what I got last year. I was definitely nervous clicking on the yellow email symbol to see my decision. On we go to the next waiting stage!
