Wait listed

Thanks for the info usnabgo08, always appreciated!

I'm going to miss everyone once DS earns NAPS or Foundation (thinking positive)! Maybe I'll come back and stalk every once in awhile:)

GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

The Class of 2018, due to the combination of it being a Congressional redistricting year, an unusually high acceptance rate from MOC slates, and too many early early appointment offers before many MOC slates were submitted, forming a perfect storm, it resulted in few slots opening after April 15th. Even so, calls were made, including to my now 3C Mid. The good news for the Class of 2020, Admissions learns from experience and sets the wait list size each year by what they believe they will probably need. So, yes, depending on how well they predicted this years acceptance rate, an offer still remains reasonably probable. I am rooting for you all.

From my understanding they send out more appointments then what they accept due to statistics. For example, they send out 1300 appointments already knowing that people are going to decline and once so many decline (hence reaching a "magic number") then they start taking people from the waitlist?

Sorry to hear so many have received the TWE today. Has anyone been added to the waitlist in this weeks email notices?

My DS is on the USNA wait list and asked to remain on it. He already has an appointment to the USMMA. It's so hard to see him hoping against hope the USNA appointment comes through since that's what he's wanted since he was 10 y.o. I keep telling him he's got the "bird in the hand" and he still has a good shot of going AD Navy after graduating from USMMA. I think he finally is accepting that but the lure of the USNA is so strong for these young men and women. We went to a forum hosted by his B&G officer a few months ago and met a Plebe there that received her appointment on July 1 last year! Presumably from the Wait List, although we didn't know enough at the time to ask her.

I have not posted or read much on the forum since my DS was also wait listed on April 14th. DS was very disappointed and we were trying to figure out next steps. However, I thought I would give everyone here a quick update.

Since then, he visited two exceptional universities he was accepted to for engineering - WashU in St Louis and Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. I am happy to announce that my DS made a decision to move forward with Carnegie Mellon (#6 top engineering university!). He really liked the campus, the city, and also the NROTC group there. He did not apply for the ROTC scholarship but he is interested in joining the group. He will apply now and hopefully get the 3 year scholarship. His passion is still to serve as an officer in the Navy/Marine Corps!

Mom and I are so proud of him! All these kids on the wait list and that applied to USNA are truly exceptional kids who will continue to do well and outperform their peers. Keep your heads held high!

We wish everyone here well and congrats again to the class of 2020! Go Navy, Beat Army!

Does anyone have insight into whether or how often a wait listed applicant is referred/admitted to NAPS?

As a general rule, the prep school is for people that USNA thinks could benefit from an extra year of academic preparation. If you are waitlisted, USNA thinks you are fully prepared for entry today

Being waitlisted is not normally a positive sign the prep school is in your future.

Not that people won't have examples of when someone waitlisted was offered NAPS, but it is not the norm.

#1 on the waitlist (if it is ranked) is not likely to be offered a NAPS slot

Thank you.

Several sources I've seen, including the note my DS got when he went on the USNA Wait List, say the Wait List is not ranked. It says if they end up having spots they need to go to the Wait List to fill, they look at all the candidates to decide which is the best fit at that moment. I guess that could have to do with where you live (perhaps if candidates from your area decline appointment, you might have a better shot), academic interests of those who decline appointment, and probably another hundred factors.

Wow, talk about making lemons into lemonade. Carnegie Mellon is a GREAT school and ROTC gets your DS to the same end goal as USNA. Best of luck to him and kudos to you for supporting him!

So I see the portal is open for the class of 2020. DS can no longer log in to check status. Wondering if that means they have got the class of 2020 wrapped up? Has anyone on the waitlist received a TWE yet? I see two added appointments from the waitlist. Congrats to those who have made it off. Still waiting and hoping here.

Did he check his email? They changed the portal login...

Yes he did. He showed me the email he received letting him know the new password and then he received another email saying disregard the first email, it was not meant for him. I guess it is just for the class of 2021. Apparently he can no longer log in to check his status for the class of 2020.

Your DS can still log on !!

However, all Applicants/Wait-listed/Appointees for the Class of 2020 have a new Password that was changed late Friday afternoon, May 6th. That was the reason for the emails from USNA Admissions.

REPEAT : The Applicants/Wait-listed/Appointees of Class of 2020 now share the new password with the Applicants for the Class of 2021.

User Name is the Same: usnacandidate
Password:
(sent to you by email from Admissions; note that it is Case Sensitive )
