Waiters ....this thread is for you

I didnʻt want to jinx my DS so I did not join until today! He received his TWE this morning, which we were kind of expecting. I am not sure if he will be competitive to reapply because his Plan A/B is to take a year and play Junior Hockey and take a couple of classes. After watching his two older sisters go through the college process Iʻve learned (the hard way) that things pretty much work out the way they are supposed to.

To those having a hard time with Plan B, Iʻll say this: jump right in! Attitude is everything after disappointment.

DD17 is currently a Sophomore at another school as a D1 athlete and a double major Chemistry/Philosophy. DD14 just graduated as Captain of her D1 Rowing team with a degree in Biology, Molecular Cell Biology. Neither of my girls attended their first choice school but had/are having an unbelievably positive experience. Sometimes the path youʻre put on is the path you need to be on. Iʻve seen enough twists and turns in my kids lives with school and sports to know this; keep showing up, keep a positive attitude, and donʻt let anyone tell you what you are.

Congrats to our new USNA class of 2023! Beat Army!
Great advice. I’ve boiled it down similarly to me DS’. No matter where you are the formula is straightforward:

1) Show up
2) Compete
3) Have fun

The beauty of it is that you and you alone control all 3. No other person or process gets to choose for you.

I’m currently losing sleep but I’ve got my nom, medically qualified and my portal says cpr. My backup is VMI. I got a full ride AFROTC scholarship which I’d have no qualms about accepting but just want closure from USNA.

My backup is also VMI! Looks like it’s time to complete all that paperwork they sent in the mail because who knows when we will all hear back from USNA.

Are you doing NROTC if you go to VMI?

I’m in his division

PSA!!!Admissions counselor said they are behind on sending out letter and they need a day or two.

I am sure ‘letters’ was a general word for a decision from admissions. I wouldn’t read too much into more than that.

That’s what I was thinking as well. I just wanted to let people know why they might not have heard back from admissions yet.

DS2 got the TWE as well. Though I'm new to the SA forum, I'm not new to this process. I have nothing but absolute respect for all of the young people applying to the service academies. It gives me and my wife faith in the future. Thank you to all of the parents who have raised such fine young adults to commit to this process. I've privately messaged a number of parents to help them with various decisions. And though some may have thought my above posts regarding those who have been accepted as harsh, I will just say that when I went through this process two years ago with my current midshipman, I would have never bragged to those who were waiting on a decision from USNA that not only did my kid get an appointment to USNA, but also got NROTC to Princeton/Notre Dame and a number of other selective schools. It hurts the parents feelings who are desperately waiting and hoping for good news from Navy. I wish all of the applicants who were not selected this year the strength and fortitude to apply again for next year. It's worth it. Take it from a guy who got two TWEs, then got in on the third try - me. If you ever have any questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck to all of those who are still CPR and in the game!!

I agree! I tell my DS to make sure he skates with a smile on his face so everyone knows how much he loves his sport - and he does! Last one on the ice every time.

DS received the TWE Tuesday. We are in a competitive area and was told 4 students were appointed to USNA from one private school. My DS goes to a public HS. We found out that every year kids get in from this school Just was thinking that my DS was already at a disadvantage. We haven’t heard anyone making the academy from a Public school ( which is very disappointing to say the least) Has anyone ever heard of this? Thanks and Good luck to everyone

Stacella,

Very sorry your son got the TWE. All of the Academies have stats on most high schools in the country. It's broken down by region, and it's also listed when a candidate is reviewed by the admissions board. There are a multitude of factors that go into a decision for a kid to get accepted, but among them, the board will review the school the candidate is coming from and stats of successful kids from that school. Also, if in a rural area and the school does not have advanced classes like Calc BC, etc, they will take that into account. They will also take into account private or homeschooled kids as well. No one knows the exact process, but having our kid get accepted to USNA from a school which he transferred into after 10th grade year, I believe they factor in everything. I'm new to the SA forums, but I've gone through this process three times myself and with my two older boys - oldest getting in on the first try and second getting the twe a week ago. It hurts, I know. But at this point - have your kid work very hard at his Plan B and reapply again. That's what we're going to do as well. Pls PM me if you have any specific questions. Congrats to your son for wanting to serve our great nation! Good luck!!

My DD is from a public school and got into USNA. We also know of a girl in our area that was accepted and goes to a private school. I don’t think it is public/private school situation at all. So sorry for your son!

As I think back over the 23 years x avg 4 new plebes/year we’ve sponsored at USNA, the majority have been from public school, a good handful from Catholic school, a dozen home schoolers, a dozen private school, including 2 from well-known NE boarding schools. Several via prep and NAPS. Over 30 re-applicants.

As noted, the high school is carefully considered and how the applicant performed in that environment.

We also don’t know the nom source(s) available to those who got in.
