Waiting for the bus...

I saw this thread and had to respond because I'd rather vent to y'all than say anything to my DS right now. He is 3Q and interviewed with our rep back in November. They published an FAQ for academy applicants on their website saying that they would let everyone know by early December, but it also says the deadline is January 31st (which we all know). Very confusing. It has been 2 1/2 months and we have heard nothing, nada, zip and neither has DS friends in our district. It's 2 days to the deadline, why do they need to wait till the last minute when districts around us that had later interviews have already announced their nominations? ARGH!!

That would be very frustrating! Has DS sent an email to the contact person at the rep office? That would be my first suggestion. My DS got an email notification from the contact person with the MOC office for his nomination. He then screen shot the email and text it to me because I was asking him everyday if he had gotten an email.

The ACTUAL answer as to ‘why do they wait til the last minute....’ is bc they can! They are all independent nomination sources. Doesn’t matter what the other one does. It’s not Jan 31st yet. It’s not the deadline yet.

The good news is that no one has been notified yet. And it’s also not a ‘no.’ There’s the silver lining.

Looks like you are waiting for a bus [emoji590] that has a transfer. So two buses! Hang in there it’s coming!!!!

Thanks y'all for the nice words! Yea, he did email the nomination rep at the office but they never replied. What a frustrating time.

THE GOOD NEWS is that he finally got the nomination! It's on his portal today! Maybe they heard us talking here, hehe!

Does anyone else have a constant feeling like they are waiting for something, hoping that a BFE or notice to check the portal will come in? Back in the day, we used to call it "waiting for the bus". It is the constant nagging feeling in the back of your head, eating up bandwidth and generally making things feel less than awesome.

My DS has been focused on getting into an academy since we took a cub scout trip to USAFA when he was in the 5th grade. He's got a solid resume, he's applied to everything except MMA (the majors just don't do it for him since he wants to get into space), DODMERB is done, and he even got nominated for all four academies from a very generous MOC. Now though, the waiting game is killing me. He's rocking out his senior year, and he's trying to "be present" with his friends, knowing if an academy acceptance doesn't appear, he'll end up going to one of the dozen solid civilian colleges that have accepted him (he got offered a type II through AFROTC and he meets with NROTC this week).

I know the pressure must be getting to him and he's doing his best to hold up. I know pretty much all of you are in the same line, waiting for the same bus so I wanted to whine about it for a minute. I don't want to complain near him because I don't want him to lose hope. I am hopeful - wildly optimistic even - but dang, man! The wait is tough!
I was in your shoes during 2018 and 2019, DS applied twice to no avail! He did everything he possible could, great grades, AFJROTC commander, AF Chief of Staff AFJROTC Flight Academy in 2018 got his pilots license, self prep Freshman Year, yadayada you know the drill. Frankly, after great disappointment the first and second time around he's completing his second year in AFROTC at state university and doing just great. I certainly was in your shoes though from January-May of both years he applied its painful to wait for sure! Good luck to your DS, if Air Force is really where his heart is, he may want to take the scholarship if he doesn't get accepted to AFA. I know my DS had also applied and was nominated for USNA, but decided even if they had offered him an appointment he very well may have turned it down as the Air Force is where his heart is. Good luck to your DS and you may want to take a vacation soon, trust me it helps get your mind off of things!

my thought is this ...colleges /SA’s have so many people applying. I think it makes sense (time-wise), to initially separate out from the thousands of applicants, say the top 10% - 15% who have a chance to make it all the way. I trust they have a long history of knowing who would fit best at the school/service academy and who wouldn’t. How can they possibly hold on to 16,000 initial applications and treat them all equally? I have never worked for an admissions office so I’m totally speculating, but I guess this is what people do while waiting...... 😬😬
Is the 16,000 number, the number that apply for candidacy? Because then yes, they cut that pool down. Not all that apply for candidacy get accepted. As well schools send out LOA to some applicants. So they are clearly reviewing applications long before the deadline. But I have a hard time believing that they’ve decided the majority of appointments at this point.

Did the BFE come first, out of the blue, or an email to check the portal? 😍:bounce1:
DS got the email to check the portal before anything else. Funny, I saw the gal who works in our Congressman's office, organizing the nomination process. She remembered our DS' applications, and was excited to hear that he got in. But then her reaction turned to frustration, when we talked about how fun it would have been to get Congressman's call. Evidently she has been leaning on him to do the calls, but somehow he always misses the window.
