Waiting to Post Nomination?

Hi All,

I was notified by my Congressman that he would be nominating me to the AFA and that I would be hearing from the AFA soon. Two weeks passed and the nomination still had not been put into my portal so I asked his staff when I could expect to see it. They said they had not submitted nominations yet and that they have until January 31st to do so. Is this normal or commonplace?

I was appointed last year as well and do not remember there being any sort of delay between when I was notified and when the nomination showed up in my portal. What could be the reason for them choosing to wait?

Thank You!

Your MOC may indeed intend to nominate you. But he/she has not submitted the slate yet to USAFA, which is why it’s not yet in the portal. The deadline for submitting nominations is 1/31, as you were told. There’s no point fretting about it because there’s nothing you can do anyway. Be patient and let things unfold. This is not the only thing on the MOC’s plate right now, and certainly not the most important.

My son was notified before Thanksgiving, the ceremony was on 12/3 and the noms just posted yesterday from his congressman. He is in Ohio. Senatorial nom posted the same day he received notification. Was an early present!

Not uncommon what you are seeing from your MOC. It will eventually be submitted officially and posted.

Nice that you had some recognition for your mom! My DS received a form letter from our MOC congratulating him on his nom - but he didn’t even have his first name correct on the letter (not even close) so it is a useless keepsake (other than a source of good-natured prodding from his older brothers). But it is posted on his portal so that’s all that really matters.

What district in Texas were you nominated in? My daughter was also nominated by her congressman via letter she received on 12/22 then a phone call on 12/24. The portal hasn’t been updated yet but I’m assuming it’s because everyone is on Christmas break.

Slates are not due until 1/31 so don't worry about it. If a slate has been submitted, then there is always going to be a delay, for many various reasons, in getting it posted to your portal.

Waiting until January 31 is very common for some TX MOCs. My DS almost had a heart attack last year waiting for the nomination slate to be submitted. He had an LOA and all he needed was a nomination.

I posted this in a Waiting thread on USNA but no answers so thought I would try again here under Nominations.

How do competitive nomination slates get resolved before the Feb 28 application deadline?
It would seem that if the MOC slate is a competitive slate and the SA application remains open until Feb 28, the "winner" of the slate cannot be fully determined until the end of the application period. Can't applicants continue continue to improve their application until Feb 28 or are the appointments determined at the time the MOC nomination slate is submitted to the SA?

Just because you have a nom it does not mean you will be charged to that MoC. The SAs know from historical data where the definitely will be appointed (WCS score) lands. Thus, they can be appointed, but not yet charged to the MoC. Basically if they don't win the MoC slate they are going to come out of the national pool.
~ Just bc someone posts on the appointment thread MoC (SEN or Cong) don't assume that this is fact, unless they were principal. Look at an LOA for example, they just need the nom., but an MoC can give them a nom., and also a principal. The principal will be charged to the MoC, the LOA will not be charged to the MoC.

There are appointees with multiple noms. The 1st may come in a few weeks prior to the other noms. They could all be competitive. They get an appointment between these few weeks, thus, they assume it is from the 1st nom due to the fact the other noms were not listed on their portal. However, nobody can be charged (except principal) until all nominees have been boarded. If the slate has 10, and only 7 have been boarded when they get the BFE, they are not officially charged to the MoC. They just assume that they are. Feb 28th rules around, everyone has a WCS. That appointee with multiple noms thinking they were charged to that 1st nom., could actually be charged to the last MoC nomination.

It is not uncommon for competitive areas to have 8 or more on the MoC slate to get an appointment. Use Sen A as an example
Candidate 1: Pres, VP, 3 MoCs. Charged to Pres
Candidate 2: 2 MoCs (Sen A and Cong district 1) Charged to Cong
Candidate 3: 3 MoCs. Charged to Sen B
Candidate 4: 2 MoCs (Sen A Cong district 2) charged to Cong
Candidate 5 : Sen A only, but with an LOA, charged to Supe
Candidate 6: Sen A only, and ROTC nom, charged to ROTC
Candidate 7: Sen A and VP high WCS charged to VP
Candidate 8: 2 MoCs. Sen A and Cong district 3. Charged to Cong district 3
Candidate 9: 2 MoCs, Sen A and Cong district 4 . Charged to Cong district 4.
Candidate 10: Sen A only. Charged to Sen A.

Yes, the highest WCS wins the appointment on the slate, but look at appointments like a 1300+ jigsaw puzzle. Candidate 10 may have actually been on the lower end of the WCS on the slate, however, bc the other 9 candidates were able to be charged differently they are now charged to that Sen since in the end they were the highest WCS left when it came to charging.

Hope that helps understanding how someone or many someones on an MoC slate may post that they have an appointment before mass mailing March.

You are very correct here, as a BGO in Northern NJ, we have 10 or so Congressional districts and 2 Senators (which we share with South Jersey). No major military
bases so not so many Presidential noms yet I've often seen approx 50 or so USNA acceptances.
.
As for how do they choose when applicants can still submit updates, remember that once the admissions board has evaluated a candidate, they can be racked and stacked which
points back toward the BGO advice that I give to all of my applicants which is GET IT DONE EARLY or the train might leave the station without you.
