I just received a waitlist offer, as I’m sure many others have as well since the April 1st deadline is tomorrow. What can we expect now, and what can we do for our applications? Also, do we have an idea of how many people on the waitlist typically get offered appointments? The waiting continues!

Just posted about that under the appointment thread. Fingers crossed though as I am not entirely sure!

I was deferred then waitlisted last year, reapplied this year, and was accepted. I was also a recruited athlete. I'm happy to answer any questions I can.

A shortened timeline:
April 1: Waitlisted
May 1: Committed to backup
June 5: Waitlist closed, added to shortlist in case something opened up before Day 1.
July 15: Submitted application for round 2

I don't recall sending in more updates for my app, but I may have sent a 3rd quarter transcript (can't remember for the life of me). Your email may give instructions on that; if not, ask AO.

The continued uncertainty is at times unbearable. I'm presently waiting for a waiver on an injury post-appointment, so I'm still with ya'll there. But, on the bright side, think of all the patience you've gained and will gain! I know of many cadets who were accepted off of the waitlist, even days before, so it is a possibility. I remember trying to analyze the statistics last year, but there are just too many variables to predict. Getting a waitlist offer at USCGA is an incredible feat in and of itself, you should be proud of your achievement! Just know CGA is small so while they want you, they don't have room. This goes to anyone who did not receive the news they wanted, if you would still like to pursue CGA, definitely consider reapplying.

My biggest regret during the waitlist process was not lining up my backup sooner. I'm not sure if it is just the school I'm at, but by waiting, I was late to the game for class registration and wasn't able to get into Chemistry. Also, lining up the backup allows a little relief and sense of certainty, which is much needed during this process. By far, the best advice I can give is to set up a call with CAPT Fredie when he offers. Incredible opportunity. He'll answer all your questions and go through your application with you, as well as strategize for next year.

Our son received a waitlist offer to. We are disappointed needless to say. He was waitlisted last year too. He held on all the way last year until they closed it. He was encouraged to reach apply so he did. Hoping that this year he will be accepted.

Thank you for all info, and congrats on your appointment. I haven’t heard of the shortlist before. How does that work?

I received a decision over night indicating I am wait-listed for CGAS...
I'll take anything I can get, and remain hopeful. I have already sent my acceptance email.

In the mean time I am enrolled at one of the 6 senior military colleges for self prep. I have a full tuition scholarship, and enough money for one semester of all the extra's (room and board, cadet fees, books, uniforms etc.)

It’s basically an extended waitlist leading up to Day 1. They’ll first email alerting you that the waitlist is closed, and that if you’d like you can opt into a short list that should something happen super last minute you’ll essentially be ready to go in a blink of an eye. Understandably, it’s not for everyone as it extends the uncertainty and resulting pins and needles, so they give you an option.

Does anyone have any insight as to how the CGAS waitlist works?
Essentially, it's an alternate pool. They don't keep a ranked list but instead are looking to round out the class. If you're wait listed it means the academy thinks you're qualified.

I don't know what your plan B is, but one thing to consider is going to one of the prep schools on your own dime. That way you can still have close contact with admissions, and you can be compared directly to CGAS students already enrolled.

Be advised that I'm the physics instructor at MMI, so take my advice with a grain of salt. If you choose to go through a different plan B route, you can still achieve your goal of getting into the academy. Just remember to take courses that mirror the freshman year.

Thank you. I have an offer for USNA Foundation and my choices are either MMI or GMC strategically chosen incase I heard from Coast Guard. I am hoping that I can go on behalf of USCGA, but if not, I may be going on behalf of USNA. Do you know if MMI is open to tour? Being from the West Coast, I am unsure if Alabama is the right atmosphere for me.

Yes, we are open for tours! Its spring here in Alabama, so now is a great time to visit. Just go to the marionmilitary.edu site or give admissions a call at 800 664 1842.

My admissions officer informed me that the waitlist for the class of 2024 was not even used last year; however, she also told me that they are going to try and pull people from the waitlist pool this year for appointments. Obviously,
it varies from year to year...I'm just hoping last year was an extreme outlier in terms of the waitlist.

Don't give up hope! Not over yet

We discussed this with our AO and he told us that an unusually high number of waivers were passed last year due to issues with getting into doctors offices this time last year. It was not a normal year. Fingers crossed! Good Luck!!

That didn't surprise me about last year. I thought it predictable at the time, in the throes of what was basically a nationwide shutdown last spring, that yield would be high with kids (and their families) thinking long and hard before turning down a fully paid education. I suspect the concerns may be different this year, less economic but more competition for admission to other top echelon schools.

Best of luck.

There was definitely a pull from the waitlist for the scholar program last year, I know of one kid that found out 3 weeks before report date. I’m sure things are a little more settled this year.
