If people are getting waitlisted, does that mean all slots for the direct class/prep class are already filled?

Asking because there hasn't been any movement in my portal for months.

Kind of, my wait list letter states "Although we cannot offer you an appointment right now to the Air Force Academy..." so I take that to mean they have already sent out all initial appointment offers, but they aren't technically full because not everyone has accepted the appointment. (There wouldn't be a wait list in the first place if all the slots were definitively full) Tell me what yall think.

they always send out more appointments than slots available because they know a certain percentage will not accept. It could be that this year more candidates have put off accepting the appointment, perhaps waiting on decisions from the other SAs. So until folks start either accepting or declining there won’t be much movement.

That makes sense. Do you think that means everyone who still hasn't heard anything back, not even on the waitlist, just didn't make it?

I could say something but it would just be me making something up, I really don't know

I feel like they would have just rejected us, though. I just don't know, to be honest, there's a million and one reasons we could think up. As always, the best is to just wait. Or, maybe ask your ALO? I just asked mine, pending response.

With the waitlist starting earlier than last year and some Falcon Scholars still waiting to hear back, I think it's hard to make an adequate comparison between this cycle and previous ones. I would say lock in your plan B, hang tight, and enjoy the outdoors doing something you love. Between now and I-Day, we will all know our status. It's not the best thing to hear, I get that.

As a side note, I've heard a theory on Reddit that the waitlist is starting earlier because too many people haven't accepted or declined their appointments, and that the waitlist can buy admissions more time. I don't personally think that's true, as the WL letter highlights that they must wait until a seat opens up before they can offer me an appointment, but I'm highlighting this to show that you will hear a lot of theories. I was once a theorist when it came to admissions and tried to read between the lines, but at the end of the day, I was wrong and was feeding into nothing more than speculation. Unless it's something official, I would be very careful treating hand-me-down information or speculative ideas. The hard reality is that only admissions knows where they're at with appointments, how they're treating the waitlist, and what they plan to do with those who were not offered a spot on the WL.

I'm hoping it works out for all of us. But the best thing to do, as I've mentioned, is to make sure you know where you're going if you're not offered anything from USAFA, and to take care of yourself mentally (especially if it means taking a break from the forums) and physically. This wasn't written specifically just for you, but all of us who are still waiting. I know you asked a very honest question, and there was nothing wrong with wondering what it could mean when you see two different situations on a forum. As I was writing this, I felt some elements should be addressed, whether they had already been brought up or not. Hopefully, we all hear something good soon!

Last year my DS received a LOI mid-November. It was crickets until April 23rd when he received a letter for the waitlist. He accepted. The letter stated he should know by May 15th. I had read that beginning May 1st all waitlisted candidates are put into a national pool- meaning appointments aren’t offered based off of your congressional district. May 15th came and went. He received his appointment on May 23rd! My advice is don’t give up hope and know that a very late appointment is possible! Best of luck!!

just a small correction - candidates who do not win their MoCs slates, and are deemed fully qualified, are all put in the “national pool”.
