Waitlisted for STEM

Email said they had 840 available spots and 5000 applicants, any reason why they would accept only 680 if that's accurate?

Maybe it's gone up though out the years. I saw that number a while back..

Is that 840 for all 3 weeks? When I talked to the admissions officer (long story involving the travel form) he said that the rising freshman group (week 1) was around 100 kids. 840 or even 680 would be a nightmare to take to the Smithsonian, let lone having enough midshipman to cover that amount. 10 groups of 10 sounded about right to me.

So my Mid says about 230 a session. We are still on the waiting list no word today!!! Anyone hear anything?

Those who posted today about getting a decline email - did you previously get a waitlist email?

Yes. Did you get one as well?

My son was waitlisted but didn't get a follow up with denial, so I guess still on the waitlist. We do live in driving distance so maybe that's a factor, who knows. We are just assuming he's not going.

Several years ago, my DS applied to USNA STEM as a rising junior. He was not accepted. However, a few months later, at the beginning of his junior year, he received an invitation to a CVW (candidate visit weekend). He attended (at my urging), even though USNA wasn't his first choice SA at the time. During the CVW in October, he had a complete change of heart and realized that USNA and the Navy are where he was meant to be. He applied for NASS, but again he was turned down. Yet, in the back of my mind, when I got discouraged by his lack of acceptance to either STEM or NASS, I remembered they saw something in him which made them invite him to the CVW, even though those are typically reserved for juniors in the spring or seniors in the fall. Fast forward to this past Tuesday, and he has emerged happy and victorious from the crucible of Sea Trials. So, for those of you who have been turned down for STEM, don't be discouraged. If you're lucky, you may even hear from USNA in a few months inviting you to a CVW! If so, jump at the opportunity, because in truth, a CVW is a more realistic way to experience life at USNA than NASS, and you'll be so glad you went.

2020-- Lots of discussion on this issue elsewhere, so I won't repeat in detail, but rest assured that selection for STEM and NASS have nothing do with competitiveness for admission. The programs are first and foremost "outreach" programs for awarenes about USNA. There is of course, some benefit to attending (at least for NASS, since you get the CFA done), but attendance doesn't give you any advantage at the Admissions level.

Totally agree and have posted same on SAF multiple times for those who would get discouraged. My son only has one plebe squad mate who went to NASS, so obviously it's no predictor of an appointment.
