Waiver approved but no LOA

My DD received notification by USNA that a waiver had been requested and was approved. Her BGO said she is 3Q. The USNA admissions site says " If you have a disqualifying condition, you will be automatically considered for a waiver if/when you receive a conditional offer of appointment" (or we assume that means LOA). Many of these threads state that USNA only requests waivers for candidates they tend to appoint. DD is CPR with a waiver and no LOA...anyone in the same boat or does anyone have any feedback on this?

Just because she was offered a waiver does not mean she will receive an appointment. At this point your DD would probably not receive an LOA because she has a nomination in hand. LOA stands for “Letter of Assurance” and these are usually granted before a nomination is received. Seeing as your DD is CPR she would just receive an appointment if she got in. A waiver shows that she is competitive, not that she will be appointed.

Just have patience. Another hurdle has been crossed. If an appointment is forthcoming no one knows except the Academy.

USNA requests waivers for candidates who they consider to be competitive candidates. I take it to say that your daughter is still in the hunt and has good stats. Being her BGO said she is 3Q that is a good thing. A lot of this is a numbers game. Good luck!

Does anyone know the process after you receive a waiver in admissions? That is if you’re considered 3Q now, does your pkg have to go back before the board after the waiver is received? Do they have a stack of candidates that are in the yes... waiver approved pile they then have to go back through???

@Spirit603 First, I doubt it goes back for review. I don't see any need for it. Once you are 3Q, you're 3Q unless you have an injury or illness you need to report to DoDMERB. Second, what difference does it make if it does get another review? Can or could you do anything differently to impact it? It's time to just sit and wait like everyone else. All the 3Q with noms will be "reviewed" when the slate winner is decided. Patience. The internal processes that the academy uses will make no difference to the outcome.

It does not go back for a review. The board determines 3Q or not.

Remember that the board basically votes qualified or not. The board is not voting on whether to admit you or not. Once you are medically qualified with the board's approval, admissions must find a way to slot you.

So if I’m understanding this correctly, after the waiver is approved then the board officially puts you at 3Q or votes you as 3Q and then it’s a matter of admissions finding a place to slate you?

No, the Admission Board only determines the Admission Board qualification (one of the Qs). The other 2Qs are determined independently --- (1) medical Q: DoDMERB and, if necessary, the USNA waiver process, handled by medical personnel on the admissions staff; (2) physical Q determined by the results of the CFA.

If a candidate has already been to the AB and deemed qualified...then their package will not go back. The only reason a package would return to the AB is if they were deferred and had not already been re-reviewed. Medical status has no bearing on the AB's decision.

Each candidate on a slate will have their status shown -- but to be considered for an appointment, any candidate on the slate must be 3Q'd. So if a slate has 10 candidates but only are 3 are 3Q'd...then only those 3 would be in the competition to win that slate. The other 2 would then be considered for a qualified alternate (on a MOC slate) or additional appointee, presuming either aren't a winner on another slate.

So does that mean since someone on my DDs slate was appointed last week that the slate is now done and she’s probably out? And what determines when they look at each slate? When all the waivers etc. have come in? Some people I’ve read on here are still waiting on waivers. Is the board notified when a needed waiver comes in as approved?

If your DD already has a nomination and the waiver, odds are good that an Offer of Appointment will be coming.
If she received the waiver but has no nomination, it is up to USNA as to whether or not they go actively looking to fill that nomination (with a Superintendent or VP nomination, for instance).
There is still hope.

Spirit603, your initial post says your DD was 3Q'd. If your DD has not received a TWE yet, then it isn't over. Just because this other candidate received an appointment and is from the same state/district, doesn't necessarily means they were for sure the slate winner and there are other opportunities to be appointed from the qualified alternates and additional appointees. However, no one on this forum is going to provide any guarantees -- best thing to do at this point in the process is to find a lot of distracting activities for next ~45 days. Always hoping for the best!

What if the waiver came very early in the process, like in early December, but there’s no appointment yet?

Thank you USNavyBGO08.... just trying to understand the process. So it appears from these conversations that if they really want a candidate they find a place to “slate” them.

Maybe I should have written "odds are better" - because they are - but "good" means a lot of different things to a lot of people.
Candidates get TWEs every year who have everything else (including waivers).

Did you see responses to your question yesterday?

By definition, if a candidate is being offered an appointment, then USNA really wants them. Now with that being said, the "really wants them" has to be done within the constraints of U.S. law regarding the making of a class.

Thanks for the responses. I think I have a better handle on everything now. Just trying to understand. I know we, like everyone else, just have to wait! I’m curious what the internal process is once a candidate is appointed how long it takes for them to get notified. I’m sure there’s some internal paperwork that has to get done before the MOC is notified etc!? Strictly a curiosity thing!:) Oh if we only could see it all right?:)
