waiver denial

So if the medical waiver is denied, is it all over? Just like that? I'm absolutely crushed (even had an LOA :( ). It's hard to believe that there's nothing left to do. Any advice on how to deal with such a sucky situation? Is there any way to appeal the decision?

Thanks everyone. Congratulations to those with an appointment (I'm jealous!)

Edit for clarification: unfortunately my waiver was already denied. I'm almost certain that means it's over for me

Don’t give up hope for the waiver. My son has an LOA and got his waiver.

Oh I’m sorry. I thought you meant if it’s denied.

Someone else can discuss appeals, if any.

I'm extremely sorry to hear that. Did you try applying for another academy? I would try asking around and see if other SA's would take a waiver, especially if you're a competitive candidate. USNA is my dream, but if I couldn't receive a medical waiver there then I would try USAFA and USMA. Other people would know better than me, but try asking around because you never know. I'm a religious young man and believe God's got a plan for everyone, I'm sure you'll be successful wherever you wind up. Good luck.

Last year I was in the exact situation. I was DQ’d with an LOA. I don’t know your medical situation but for mine, it took time and I reapplied and now I have accepted an appointment. I know the feeling and it’s not fun, but see if there are options

Normally a "denied waiver" means it is over. There is BIG however though....in reality if the academy really wants you, they may deny the waiver but try and get you scheduled for a Specialty Examination by usually a surgeon who can re-examine your problem discuss it with you, review any update medical info and then.....IF someone who is appointed declines that appointment you can still get in. In reading some posts on this forum I have heard of all kinds of crazy things that happen to candidates and they get in....maybe call you the day before R-Day and tell you to be there the next day. Crazy things happen...it isn't EVER over till it's over.. Keep the Hope!

I don't mean to be a downer, but what Impulsive says is absolutely not true. Waiver denials are final except in the rare instance that you can provide new, objective information that clears the DQ (ie: nut challenge or new MET) AND your RC is willing to hand walk it through the medical process. This would only be done for a candidate that would be certain of receiving an offer.

Did you apply for an AROTC scholarship? I have heard of circumstances where WP denied, but AROTC approved. Don't give up on your goal to become an Army officer because the WP door closed. I know the disappointment feels like a gut punch, but it is during these moments of profound disappointment where we dig down and find the character, strength and creativity to make our own path toward a goal.

I am so sorry greenleaf. Are you willing to divulge what condition the waiver request was for? My son is starting the application process soon as a junior but he has a medical condition (artificial lens in one eye due to childhood eye injury) that will be an automatic DQ. He wants to give it a shot for the waiver. It's a tough road to hoe.

@jk2009, I thought was what I said? I was just adding that if you read all the threads pertaining to your issue here I have read posts that had said you could get a waiver at the last minute and have 24 hours to report.

@Impulsive - I think what you posted is confusing and some of it is somewhat untrue.
For example - "in reality if the academy really wants you, they may deny the waiver" If they want you, why would they deny the waiver? I think what you meant to say is that they would deny the denial, which they can do.
Also - the OP has a LOA - so he/she has a spot reserved. He/she doesn't need a spot to open.
Also - if someone declines/loses an appointment and they have a MOC nom, WP does not have to go back to that slate to fill that opening. WP is not obliged to refill that nom, so that spot can go to someone on the NWL.

I’m sorry your waiver was denied. I don’t know the reason, but please understand that military life is not easy. If it’s an allergy, you will be based in very remote locations with “primitive” medical care and asking the third world cook if the food is allergy safe... well good luck conveying that. Other things such as hearing issues, orthopeadic issues, etc can be exacerbated by military service.
Having said all of that, if it is something that time might give you a chance to demonstrate is not an issue apply again. You never know.
Finally, please know that the waiver personnel take no joy in being “dream crushers”.

@buff81, I am sorry if I am confusing. Really don't mean to be. All I was trying to say was that some OP's on this forum have said that even if a waiver was denied, that the academy's still have some latitude if you submit AMI and an appointment becomes available. A lot of people here keep saying it is never over till it's over. And my understanding with an LOA is if it is waiver conditional, and the waiver is not granted then the LOA becomes moot? And I don't believe I ever commented on the MOC NOM procedures as I am not familiar with them. Sorry if I confused anyone.
