Hello,

I recently received correspondence that a waiver was denied for me. I didn't know a waiver had been requested in the first place, and no additional medical information was requested of me. Is there a way to appeal the decision? The waiver is for asthma, which I had as a child but no longer have, as proven by a pulmonary function test. If there is a way, who do I send my updated medical information to? Thanks in advance.

I’m not sure about rotc, but I know UsAFA waivers are requested by the academy, then the candidate is sent a messgae with instructions about how to pursue it. These are time sensitive and waiver requests can be denied if the candidate does not respond to the request within a week. Possibly what happened? Weird that you did not know about it in the first place. I would contact the academy or maybe Dodmerb. I’m not sure how to directly contact the waiver authority.

Did your portal not show that you were DQ'd?

A waiver is not started until a candidate is disqualified first. Asthma is often DQ'd automatically depending on what is on the questionnaire and what the examining physician observed. Once the DQ happens, it is up to the individual academy or ROTC program to waive or deny.

You can possibly appeal the waiver, but you would need to likely start with the DoDMERB case person (DoDMERB is located at AF Academy but supports all of the military academies and ROTC programs)

Keep in mind that while AFROTC may deny your waiver, other programs such as Army ROTC or NROTC might grant it. As stated, each program conducts its own individual waiver review.

Yes, my portal shows that I have been DQ'd. I applied to USAFA during the previous cycle (Class of 2023) and I was DQ'd then as well. I think the same DoDMERB physical was used for AFROTC, but I am confused as to why I wasn't even considered for an AFROTC waiver. I'll try contacting my case handler. Thanks for the info!

I think you are correct, DoDMERB physicals are good for 2 years. if you were denied last year, it is likely they are using the same info they used last year, unless you submitted AMI sometime after the last DQ. Did USAFA request a waiver last year? If not, I would contact your admissions contact and advise them you have additional info for them if they wish to conduct a waiver review.

Also, since you were not waived last cycle, have you attended a University and participated in AFROTC as a "walk on" this year? If so let you advisor at the Unit know about your medical issues and hopefully they will help you work through them. If you attended a University and did not do walk on AFROTC then you need to contact your Unit at your school and talk to them.

We just went through this exact thing for food allergies that were outgrown. As soon as we saw the waiver denied we went, on our own, to do an oral challenge and sent that to the contact on the bottom of the correspondence. Dodmerbs reviewed, asked for even more information, and finally (after many stressful weeks) the waiver was granted. This was for afrotc. Good luck!

My DD just discovered she was "waiver denied" today, 24 hours after finding out about her AFROTC scholarship. Does this mean they didn't even look at the file? She has complete and pending applications and nominations for 3 service academies, and has been DQ'd since August with no movement on those. Thus, the quick denial on AFROTC came as a surprise.
