Title says it all. If my waiver is denied, does that there is no point in pursuing an appointment to that SA?

If no waiver is sought by one SA, it may be by another. Depends on the DQ. Additionally a DQ for a SA may not be a DQ for ROTC.

+1 @justdoit19

Also, a denial of waiver in 2019, might NOT be a waiver if you reapply in 2020. Some DQ's may be based on the amount of time since the condition manifested itself.

Have a plan B, C and D and work it!

My DS had to resort to Plan D, and he is now a 2LT.

Hello- MY DS received a DQ but for something we think, based upon other posts, is waiver eligible. How were you notified that a waiver had been initiated by your SA? The DoDMERB protal or the SA Portal? Thanks!

DS rec’d a waiver his first go around applying from AF but was denied by the others. His second year applying he only wanted one academy and USMA granted him a waiver this time. He is currently a Plebe! Follow your dreams!

@serviceaboveAll That is so interesting. I would have thought if a waiver was denied (or was it not pursued at all?) the first year of application that they would not have given one the second year. Really surprising. I would have probably advised my son not to re-apply to the academies who had denied the waiver the first round. I guess things change from year to year and it may not even be the same people making the decision a year later. Great for your son!

Oh boy, not good advice at all. Something could be waived one year and not the other due to many different factors: the amount of xxx the SA allows. Which can change next year. Whose quota may have already been met during one cycle but not the next. The needs of the SA. Changes in treatment of xxx. Advancements in understanding of xxx. Lots of reasons.

Certainly some things are non-waiverable no matter what.

It's DoDMERB, so sometimes it depends and sometimes it doesn't. They are not the final deciders, that responsibility goes to the individual SAs, so if need is higher one year than another at one school or another then some opportunities could change. But if you're facing a hard DQ for a substantial reason it's not going to go away. And sometimes it matters how long ago it occurred. And a different doctor could write a better note. And so it depends and people recommend reapplying. But your chances? It depends.

Think of DoDMERB as a two step process:
  1. DoDMERB first screens the physical and questionnaire on a rigid black and white basis. This is a centralized process for all SA's and ROTC programs, and is based in Colorado Springs located at the AF Academy. Highly objective.
  2. Waiver Process: An area where each SA and program can determine if they wish to waive the DQ. This is where "gray areas" exist. As StPaulDad said, it can vary year to year or as treatments progress. It also depends on the needs of that particular SA or program. Much more subjective!

I suggest you contact the medical person at the relevant SA and ask whether a waiver might be possible next year and, if so, under what conditions. Some conditions just won't be waived, period. As noted above, others may be subject to an annual limit (e.g., colorblindness) and thus a waiver may be possible in year 2 even if denied in year 1.

The above said, if a waiver for this cycle (Class of 2024) has already been denied, that's not a good sign. The reason is that a waiver in early October suggests it's not a "number"s issue (as they won't know how that looks until much later in the cycle) and also a condition that isn't likely to improve or resolve in the 8+ months between now and I-Day. But you won't know until you ask.

USAFA notified me that they had initiated the waiver process by posting a letter to my application portal. In that letter, they asked me to call a number to confirm my status. DoDMERB themselves did not contact me directly (and at the time of this writing, there is no update to my DoDMERB status since the original DQ for USAFA).

Thank you, 20!

Can you confirm that the waiver request was put in only after your app was 100% complete, to include your interview? Since I think I read you did your CFA recently, was that the last part and the waiver request came right after?

Update: After completing and uploading my CFA results to USAFA, I received a letter on my portal stating that my waiver has been denied. The letter was posted the next morning after my CFA. I don't believe the timing of my CFA had a bearing on the determination of my waiver.
When I received the waiver denial letter, I still had the essays to complete and the ALO interview to do. There's really nothing I can do as far as this waiver denial goes; I gave all my eye doc records to DoDMERB when then requested a remedial.

I suppose that's it for me at USAFA. I hope USNA will grant my waiver. Good luck to all candidates applying for USAFA this year!

Wow! That was a fast turnaround! I’m sorry to hear about the denial. What has your ALO said?

Good luck with the other academies.

It’s not DoDMERB, it’s the service academy. They decide whether to pursue a waiver. First year DS contacted his RC about his DQ and was told he was in the middle of the pack for both him Nom slates, so most likely would not pursue a waiver. Second year it all moved so fast but we suspect he was at the top of his Nom slates according to his FFR. Hope that helps clear things up. Things definitely can change year to year depending on other candidates in your pool.
