Hello all just wanted to provide some hope for those who were disqualified for asthma and eczema. I was disqualified somewhere around October because I checked off the boxes in my initial exam. Due to my liaison officer at USMA telling me it would be best to get a Methacoline challenge test, I went to the hospital around late October.

I passed the test and sent all items to the academies I applied to (USAFA and USMA). No word yet from USMA but two days ago recieved a waiver for both disqualifications. The asthma was waiver on a basis of "essentially resolved using negative objective and bronchoprovication testing".

So, keep your hopes up and pray to pass these test cause the waiver might just come through !

Do you mind sharing how you went about getting the test done? DS is DQ'd for asthma (wheezes when he gets an upper respiratory infection every couple of years). Need to see about being proactive and getting the test.

I went to the pulmonologist and they performed a Pulminary function test. I had to get a referral from my primary care provider, and that was from a military treatment facility. Then, the pulmonologist gave me yet another referral to the hospital because the MTC test aggravates the lungs. There is a change that one can go into a asthma attack because of the chemicals and complications will arise.

I then had to go back to the pulmonologist to get the readings interpreted, and then I sent it to all the academies.

The whole thing took about two months because of all of the visits. The test is very difficult and even though I haven't taken an inhaler in about a year and never suffered an asthma attack, I was feeling very lightheaded and drained. I used a spirometer thing that patients use after surgeries (the one where you inhale for the max amount) in order to train for it.

Hope that helps

How was the waiver process for Eczema?
They did not require any documents and I thought, perhaps mistakenly, that it was a non-issue. I was actually denied a waiver for AFROTC because of eczema, even though I was waived there for asthma as well.

They listed mine as intermediate reoccurant eczema and waived it with no addition info, in conclusion.

I know this reply is a few years old now, just trying you get as much information as possible. When you had your exam, did you have eczema at the time, it just a history of it? Were you getting active treatment at the time?

The only absolute answer you can receive would come from a DODMERB official. I have seen (last year) a scholarship winner lose his "Full Ride J-100 AFJROTC/AFROTC Scholarship" because he had a report of eczema in his records. A LONG process ensued but in the end, it was not waivered by the USAF. It WAS waivered by the USN/USMC and he's now on a scholarship (USN, USMC Option).

I've seen many candidates DQ for asthma and no way did they receive a waiver. But I have seen some waivers.

The bottom line is: only a DODMERB official can speak to this with authority; speculation here is just that: speculation.

If you have a direct question, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you go to the DODMERB forum and read Mr. Larry Mullen's "sticky" on how to reach out to him...do that. I have "chatted" with Mr. Mullen in the past; he's very straight-out, full of information, he won't BS you, nor will he sugarcoat things...he'll just tell you how it is, OR what you should do...

Just my recommendation...

Thank you. I was thinking about doing that but I saw that Mr. Mullen is taking time off from this forum while the DODMERB fiasco gets fixed. I'll be watching for his return. Thanks for the suggestion.
