Waiver Granted ~ Does this mean what I think it means?

I've been checking DS's Dodmerb status daily for the past few weeks hoping to see a hopeful indicator. He had a medical DQ for a minor visual problem which would not require a remedial. Today his status changed to "Medical Waiver Granted" under USNA.
Am I being over confident in taking this to mean he should be expecting an appointment?
Would the waiver grant also be necessary for a NAPS offer?
Would they grant the waiver and then sent a TWE?
Trying not get too excited here...

Thanks for any responses.

Based on my knowledge, this means he is now qualified for an appointment to the USNA or NAPS. It doesn't mean a BFE is on the way, but I have heard that a candidate has to be somewhat competitive if they request a waiver for him/her. In other words, they won't grant a waiver to someone who doesn't have a chance at an appointment.

Keep in mind that a waiver is not an LOA in any way, though--it just means your DS is now eligible for an appointment. He could hear back as late as April or even May regarding his status. Or it could be sooner. ;) Tough to tell. Good luck, and welcome to phase 2 of the waiting game! :D :thumb:

I personally failed dodmerb as well and through talking on the phone with the USNA medical board head, USNA only grants waivers to those candidates "in line for an appointment" (probably NAPS appointments aswell) so congrats!

Congrats Snickerdoodle! I too have been checking Dodmerb status daily for DD. I would be thrilled to be in your shoes! Best of luck to you in getting that BFE!

Waivers are submitted for candidates who are competitive for appointments. It means he is now qualified medically and if he has the other 2 Qs (which I am assuming he has or they wouldn't probably ask for medical waiver) with a Nom he is eligible for an appointment. It means he is still in the running.

Fortunately for our OP I think it is even more significant than eligible for an appointment. I was explicitly told that the waiver process for USNA is ONLY for those applicants who are about to be appointed

There are folks every year granted waivers who receive the TWE. It is definitely a positive but I wouldn't say it definitely means a BFE is coming.

Another way to look at it; they would not request a waiver, go through the hassle of reviewing all the paperwork, etc. if they didn't think the candidate wasn't worth the effort. It's a very good sign. NOT 100%, but very definitely positive.

Thank you for the responses.
I'll psychologically do the same thing as when he received his nomination last month: I allow myself 24 hours to be really excited thinking about I Day and how happy my son will be...then go back into subdued mode expecting the dreaded TWE, checking NROTC status and making sure finances are in place for Plan C.(this is OP, ipad automatic login w/old id)

False, a waiver for medical reasons just clears them...well, medically. With that waiver though, he's still being considered for an appointment for either direct entry or NAPS. So yes, you need to be cleared to enter NAPS because they expect you to commit to USNA after you complete and that file will stay with you until you commission or until something changes. And yes, they have granted medical waivers and sent TWE's for academic or physical deficiencies.

Direct quote from my RD " If/when you become in line for an offer of appointment at USNA, the medical waiver process will automatically begin. "

"If your admissions record is competitive, and if any disqualifying condition is one for which a waiver might be possible, USNA begins the medical waiver process."

If you're in line for an offer, why would they start a waiver process and all of a sudden a waiver isn't granted? A waiver clears them for the offer

Kent 2015 - Communication can be a funny thing. I have no doubt your RD shared that with you AND he/she MAY have meant it the way it appears to read... That a USNA waiver being initiated and granted was a "tell". Even if that was intended, it can not be taken as a "bankable" promise. As last year's admissions process painfully revealed (when many 3 Q'd principle noms received TWE's reportedly due to USNA having offered too many early LOA's), a LOT can happen on the way to the bank. So for you and the OP - until you receive good or bad news - there's no sure way to tell what the waiver means at this point other than that a candidate is still in the mix which is no small accomplishment. Godspeed.

DD received DoDMERB request Tuesday for additional DDS info regarding her ineligibility (root canal issue last summer). They initiated the waiver process. Lo and Behold! She received an LOA today pending waiver. FINGERS CROSSED!! Here's hoping the same for all :)

DS received a waiver from USNA in October. We thought it was a good sign. He got the Wait List TWE in April, and the final TWE in May. Don't want to be a downer, but ... I suspect someone puts competitive files in the pile for waiver evaluation, after which the jockeying related to nominations and slates seems to come into play.

OP again -
Met the mail truck and found a TWE...freaked out for 1/2 hour until DS arrived home. Turns out the letter says "...You are guaranteed an offer of appointment if your remaining admission requirements are satisfactorily met..." and the only thing checked off is Medical. I called DODMERB as instructed and was told the waiver was granted so that was all set. The letter was dated 3/9 and the waiver was granted on 3/11.

NOW, does this mean what I think it means?????

Sounds like the waiver was granted and a BFE is on its way! That is an LOA! Congrats.

Congratulations! I have actually tired to just be a reader of the post for now but when I read your post, it made me actually tear up a bit as my DS has been sitting with a medical wavier since Oct and has 2 noms and has heard nothing.....

Oh, Navymom I hope it happens for your DS! I was checking dodmerb daily. My son's had also been since October. The day he received the DQ was crushing. It wasn't until he met w/his BGO who assured us that his was one of the most commonly waived conditions that he started to have a little hope again.

Snickerdoodle, sounds like good things are happening for your DS. Congratulations! Go Navy!
