Waiver process has him going to an allergist

So he sailed through the first food challenge with flying colors and the allergist's report says he feels the other challenges are not needed. All the paperwork is in the Academy's hands so now we wait.

At the risk of jinxing things, just got word from USNA (and our Congressman) that the medical waiver has been granted and all that remains is for the office of Nominations and Appointments to convert the"conditional offer of appointment" to a "fully qualified offer of appointment." They said we should have the letter in the mail tomorrow.

I won't be able to relax until we are actually holding it in our hands.

Wow! Congratulations and sounds like quite a journey. If a child has a history of nut allergy (probable oral allergy syndrome) would you recommend starting the allergy evaluation prior to the DODMERB exam?

xyz -- Yes -- I would recommend first trying to find an allergist with a military background. Then consult with them and explain that your child is thinking about going to a SA. You might ask about starting a desensitization program . . .Can take months to years, but in the end it can work for some children to where they no longer have the food allergy

Right now USMA and AROTC have a history of granting a waiver for certain nut allergies but every case is different.

USAFA and AFROTC do not grant the waiver if you have a nut allergy. You have to prove you do not (or no longer) have the allergy in order to get a waiver. I have heard USNA is the same but do not know directly. Coach would know better

Coach's experience is the best outcome possible. They went through the process and proved no allergy, thus waiver granted.

Spot on, Falcon A.

xyz - Glad to share some details of our experience if you think they may prove helpful. Just send a private message.

Thanks Falcon A and Coach Karl; Child is primarily interested in USMA, secondarily in USNA at this point, pending SLE and NASS. I think I need more posts to utilize private messaging
