Waiver Question

Hello. After searching through some threads I have a question about the waiver process.

Context
I finished all of my medical examinations in early August and received a DQ at the end of the month. I've been under "Waiver Review" since the end of August with no change to my DODMERB portal.

Question
Is it possible that I still could be waiting for a decision in June? Is there anything I should do in the meantime? (I've already completed everything else in my applications and have already received a nomination from my Congressman).

All help is greatly appreciated.

I’d call them Tommorow morning and just make sure nothing happened or got messed up on their end

We’ve been stuck in the same position for USNA and USAFA since Sept 1. We too have a nomination for both. I suspect we may be in for a long wait and they will only consider a waiver if they want to offer an appointment.

I believe waivers have been given as late as after I-Day... which doesn't make much sense to me but that's what someone wrote on the thread stickied in the USNA subforum. In my case, my technician told me to send as much extra information as was absolutely necessary to a fair decision being made by the academy. The less they have to sift through, in theory, the faster they'll be able to make a decision when they get to your file. Good luck.

The thing to remember about medical waivers is that which nobody likes to hear: if you have received a medical DQ, you will not be automatically considered for a waiver. You will only be considered for a waiver if the SA requests it. I can't speak for any SA other than USAFA with any authority. USAFA has in the past been one of the latest to request waivers. Why? I have not received an "official" answer and I doubt any ALO will. So I must go with speculation gained from over 20 years of ALO duty.

USAFA has so many 3Q candidates, they don't "need" to ask for waivers. Again, my opinion only (which means with that and $1.09 you can get an XL soda at Circle K)

However they VERY often do request waivers so that doesn't mean a DQ is a "end of the line" declaration. If the candidate package is that strong, and they are "attractive" to the SA...the waiver request is made. And then that process (which can be very quick and easy or long and very convoluted) begins.

Patience here is VERY difficult but necessary.

Have you ever noticed if they are requested more often in a certain month, like February after all the noms and apps are due?

Be Proactive with them and consistent. My son just received "waiver granted" status today. He has been going back & forth for a solid year.

Flying Wings et all - This is MullenLE. I am the Deputy Chief, DoDMERB. I’m having problem with my MullenLE account right now.

The GENERAL ANSWER to your question is YES, but highly unlikely.

A MORE DETAILED ANSWER is “Waiver Review” actually means it is up to the Admissions Offices of the Academies that you’ve applied to, to determine whether they will direct their medical team to consider you for a waiver.

As the MOST FINITE ANSWER to your question, email me at “Dodmerb_SAFORUMS@yahoo.com” with your complete name and I can answer your specific status there.

Is there any course of action that can be taken to initiate a Dodmerb review other than the academy asking for one? I have been granted a waiver through AFROTC, Dodmerb has evidence that my "condition" is no longer active (food allergies that have been cleared). I believe I am a strong candidate and am keeping my fingers crossed, I have three nominations, I just feel like the only thing holding me back right now is being DQ'd for something I don't have.

No.
Go to the DODMERB website; hit “questions about the process on the left hand side; read paragraphs 11, 12, 22. Those will answer your questions.

In general, would you say waivers are more easily obtained from a service's ROTC authority vs their Academy, or no?

”Easily” is a term that is non-applicable. Each case is looked at individually within each Service and program. In the past, I stated publicly and privately, that of all the Academies and ROTC programs over the last two decades, from a non-scientific perspective, AROTC turned out to be the most liberal and AFROTC was the most restrictive, with the Academies and NROTC in the middle. This makes sense because in the Army, there are lots of folks required to do lots of things, so flexibility in assignment and branching is much greater, whereas in the AF, there are far fewer folks and more specialized in terms of the assigned specialties. Whether that continues to hold true or not with the new medical waiver authority for USAFA and AFROTC, remains to be seen. But organizationally, the AF has not changed.
