I recently received an appointment conditional on me being DoDMERB medically qualified. I was also recently disqualified because of accutane usage, and am now under waiver review. Is accutane commonly cleared by a waiver? I really want to accept my appointment but don't necessarily want to if I am not cleared by DoDMERB. How long does it take for waiver results to come back, and should I just accept my appointment anyway and deal with the DoDMERB stuff when it comes back? I don't want to commit to going just to be dissapointed if DoDMERB comes back not granting me a waiver.

I guess it really depends on how bad you want it? Some medication DQ’s require a ‘time off of them’ element. *I’m not DODMERB* but my recollection is this is one of them. The DQ isn’t necessarily the usage of the medication.

Only you can answer your question. Are you a sports recruit, where you are deciding about ‘committing?’ BC that’s a whole different discussion.

There are lots of people in your same situation: awaiting medical waivers. And each situation is unique. Not standard. The best way to go about it, is to answer inquiries promptly.

Good luck to you.

Also, there is quite a bit of misunderstanding regarding DODMERB and waivers…and ‘accepting an appointment’. You might want to go to the DODMERB primary source and gain an understanding of how it all works. Including flow charts.

The SA issues the waiver, not DODMERB. DODMERB finds the candidate Q/DQ. Waiver authorities (USAFA in your case) can issue waivers, or not.

Yes, accept the appointment.

I don't have specific insight into USAFA's waiver authority's decisions but know that they make the decision to give a waiver, not DoDMERB. The waiver authority are a group of physicians at USAFA and they will decide if your use of Accutane could cause you injury during BCT or make you un-deployable. Since I am no doctor, I can't give you a yes or no on whether or not you will receive a waiver.

As always, continue with applications to backup schools.
