Waiver USAFA

Not at the academy but one of my sons needed to get a waiver for a shoulder injury. If I can help I will. Best person to speak to is referenced in the thread about an ACL repair and is lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil who can answer pretty much any DoDMERB question.

Mr. Mullen, former Deputy Director DoDMERB, used to post openly here and was a treasured resource. He retired over a year ago, after decades in the job, and we haven’t seen him since. Miss him still. He was all about being straightforward with a candidate.

All good. I was disqualified last year but I don't think I was quailed to even get a waiver. I have looked on DODMERB and my conditions answer the questions need to get a waiver and our nothing severe.

I’m not sure what your post is saying. But, some DQ’s are a ‘time passed’ type of issue before they can be waived. Some DQ’s are not waiverable at all. My point is that bc you were not issued a waiver last year for an injury doesn’t meant you couldn’t be this year.

Of course, the SA/ROTC program is the waiver authority, issuing them to whom they choose. Just because your condition is potentially waiverable, doesn’t mean you will automatically be issued one.

Previously when you received a DQ, was a waiver review requested? You would have received notification from the SA they had requested a waiver be considered on your behalf.

No, it was not.
o.k. thank you for clarifying - I wasn't sure based on the previous posts. Well work on submitting the strongest application you can. Only competitive applicants (those "in the running" as they say) are given reviews for waivers. As Mr. Mullen would say, the reason for the DQ is a moot point if the application is not considered competitive. Good luck! I hope this round goes well for you.

USAFA just got my medical results, so I am wondering how long until they request a waiver.

Others can respond with more information but for my DS, he received a letter from USAFA within 24 hours of the DQ informing him that a waiver review was being initiated. However, there are so many variables. USAFA can take a week, several weeks, or months to initiate the waiver, or they never do - it depends on so many other factors and those go to the competitiveness of the application. Hang in there - it can be a long haul.

My daughter needed a waiver.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are medically DQed, there's nothing you need do. USAFA or other service academy initiates the waiver process.

DoDMERB has a checklist they go through to determine qualification (at a high level).
The waiver authority at USAFA initiates the waiver process where the medical team then may ask for additional information (through DoDMERB). This can include all medical records, physical therapy records, etc. It is the waiver authority that then determines if a waiver is granted.

Every situation is evaluated on a case by case basis.

The waiting game is tough USAFA just got my medical results 2 days ago.

My DS received an email immediately indicating that his waver review was underway, and he received the actual waiver in less than 2 weeks.
Did he have his applications for service academies turned in before he went to DoDMERB? Or did they pursue a waiver before his whole application was turned in?
