Hello all!!

Quick question. I heard somewhere that if you end up getting a waiver that your chances of getting appointed are pretty good. I don't remember where I saw this, but it makes sense to me that they wouldn't give a candidate a waiver then immediately reject them.

In my case, I just got a waiver a couple weeks ago for my body fat percentage because it is above what USAFA accepts. I passed the CFA (after two tries) but the rest of my application is very good.

I was just wondering if anyone had any inside information about how they hand out these waivers.

Thank you so much!

I don't have any answers to your question, sorry, but can I ask you a question?

How long did it take for you to receive a waiver after you submitted the appropriate waiver forms?

From what I understand, if the Academy requests a waiver on your behalf, they are deeming you competitive for an appointment. Only a small percentage of the incoming class is granted waivers. So.. it's a good sign, but not a certainty.

Thanks for your reply!

They told me that my body fat was outside their standards the first time in October, before my application was even due and after my medical exam. They had me go to a doctor and get measurements, and they told me I was outside the standards within 24 hours. I was told to continue to exercise, and they would re-evaluate my body fat percentage in March. But on February 7th they contacted me to get my measurements done again. I knew there was no way I was below their standards still (I'm very fit, but my body doesn't do much changing), so I was really worried. I knew my measurements would be better, but still not quite there. I submitted the measurements and got no reply until March 4th saying I received a waiver for my body fat percentage.

My dad (a retired Army major) says because I got the waiver, I have a "90% chance of being appointed" but he honestly just pulled this number out of nowhere. I was hoping that I could go to a more correct source.

Thank you again!

The academy will request a waiver if they deem you as competitive on the "slates" you sit for appointment. If you are #1 or #2 on the slate, the process the request but if you are #10 and have no reasonable chance for appointment then they would not waste the time. Since it is late in the process and they pretty much know where everyone stands in terms of rankings, I would tell you that you are still competitive on getting an offer.
The only person who can really tell you this is your admissions rep at the academy. You should reach out to him and ask him where you stand.

Football players and swimmers do have a tendency to have their body types fall outside the ranges USAFA sets. I have known several Falcon linemen whose body frame (and weight) vary quite a bit depending on the season - as in football season, or not.

My DS got the same body fat waiver Fen 28th. We still waiting, hoping and praying. Good luck to you.

Thank you for all of your help!! I just got my appointment less than an hour ago, so I'm good to go!! Super nervous but even more excited!!

Congratulations!

How were you notified? By mail, email, on your portal?
Just portal. I just did my daily check before bed and I saw that my status had been changed to "Appointee". I was hoping for a phone call from my Congresswoman, but I'm just happy I finally got in!!

Hi! Question......when you received the letter about body fat (before you received your waiver) what did your DoDmerb status say on your portal? Qualified or DQ? Your posts have been so helpful!

It still said "Qualified" the whole time. My application was also "Complete" and I was a "Canadate" the whole time too. I only knew about all of it through my mailbox.

I'm happy to help!

I actually checked my portal and saw I was an appointee before any email was sent. I got like three emails about two hours later.
